NVIDIA (NVDA-US) is reportedly planning to invest approximately $10 billion over the next three years to acquire long-haul 'dark fiber' infrastructure across the United States, aiming to build an independent AI fiber backbone network. This strategic move is intended to reduce reliance on traditional telecom providers and cloud service providers (CSPs), while expanding NVIDIA's AI infrastructure footprint. The news has ignited investor enthusiasm in the optical communications sector, with LUXNET (3081-TW) surging to涨停 for the second consecutive day on May 23. Other stocks, including Walsin Opto (4979-TW), Lintel (3450-TW), and Opto Engineering (3234-TW), also briefly hit涨停, leading a broad rally across multiple optical communications firms.
'Dark fiber' refers to pre-installed but currently inactive fiber-optic cables reserved for future network expansion. According to institutional analysis, NVIDIA plans to spend between $5 billion and $10 billion over the next three years to acquire these unused fiber assets across the U.S. By doing so, NVIDIA can interconnect its geographically dispersed data centers, forming a large-scale AI computing platform with ultra-high-speed, low-latency connectivity.
In the market, in addition to LUXNET, Walsin Opto, and Lintel reaching涨停, other optical communications stocks such as Powertech Technology (3163-TW), Suncom Technology (3363-TW), Lightway (6442-TW), and JDSU-KY (4977-TW) also rose more than half a涨停 board. Institutional investors note that the optical communications sector had previously corrected sharply due to market sentiment and capital outflows. However, as AI data centers continue to expand, demand for high-speed data transmission remains strong and is expected to persist.
Analysts point out that many optical communications stocks have undergone deep corrections, primarily due to earlier research forecasts indicating delayed product demand and downward valuation adjustments. Nevertheless, given the positive long-term industry outlook, recent sharp declines have led to relatively stable investor positioning. From an investment perspective, these stocks warrant continued monitoring and potential strategic positioning.
