CME Group (CME-US) announced that its 1-ounce gold futures have gone live with a 24-hour, seven-day trading mechanism. Despite limited price volatility, the first weekend's trading volume delivered a strong performance, surpassing expectations.

According to the press release, CME has officially launched weekend trading for gold futures, breaking away from the previous model restricted to weekday trading. During the first weekend, nearly 15,000 contracts were traded, with a notional value of approximately $60 million.

Jin Hennig, CME’s Executive Director and Head of Global Metals, said, 'Gold is a global hedge asset, and global events don’t stop over weekends. Our launch of round-the-clock trading proves that retail investors are already prepared to use regulated, accessible, and appropriately sized products to manage their gold exposure.'

He noted that market order books were active throughout the trading period, with bid-ask spreads staying within $1 for most of the time and narrowing to as low as $0.25 during certain periods, indicating strong liquidity.

In recent years, financial markets have increasingly moved toward 24/7 trading, enabling investors to react immediately to economic data releases, geopolitical events, or major news announcements.

The cryptocurrency market has long operated on a 24/7 basis, and major U.S. stock exchanges are exploring extended trading hours for equities. Derivatives exchanges, including CME, have been expanding near-24-hour trading services, reflecting growing investor expectations for immediate market access when news breaks.

Hennig stated that the participant profile for the 24-hour trading closely matches that of the existing 1-ounce gold futures client base, with demand still primarily driven by retail investors. He also pointed out that trading activity was evenly distributed, with about half of CME’s metals trading volume coming from markets outside U.S. trading hours.

CME’s metals business averaged 1.3 million contracts per day in the first half of 2026, a 55% increase compared to the same period last year, driven largely by rising demand for precious metals trading.
