A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, on July 28, causing widespread damage including bridge collapses, transportation disruptions, and building collapses, severely impacting local infrastructure and daily life. Many residents were forced to evacuate, and aftershocks continue to occur. In response, CTBC Bank and its subsidiary Tokyo Star Bank announced today (30th) a joint donation of 50 million yen to support relief efforts, aiming to assist affected residents in rebuilding their lives through medical aid, supply distribution, and post-disaster reconstruction.

CTBC Bank emphasized the strong cultural and emotional ties between Taiwan and Japan. Tokyo Star Bank has been operating in Japan for many years and has recently expanded its presence in the Kyushu region. Since signing a cooperation memorandum with Kumamoto Prefecture in 2024, the bank has established a local branch to serve businesses and residents, building close connections. It also maintains deep financial and business relationships with local institutions and enterprises, underscoring its strong commitment to Kumamoto.

In response to the earthquake, CTBC Bank and Tokyo Star Bank are jointly donating 50 million yen to support medical relief, supply replenishment, and reconstruction efforts. They will continue to monitor local needs and provide additional necessary assistance. To help clients affected by the earthquake resume normal life as soon as possible, Tokyo Star Bank’s Kumamoto branch has set up a consultation desk to offer financial advice and support to disaster victims. Staff members fluent in Chinese are also available to assist Taiwanese residents living and working in Kumamoto.

CTBC Bank has long been attentive to major disasters both domestically and internationally. In addition to this Kumamoto earthquake, it provided immediate support following the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake, the 2018 Osaka earthquake, and the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake. The bank aims to fulfill its corporate social responsibility and leverage its influence to help affected communities restore normalcy as quickly as possible.
