Recently, Taiwan's stock market experienced severe volatility, breaking below the 40,000-point threshold. Pegatron (4938-TW) Chairman Tung Tzu-hsien attended the 2026 AI Application Expo today (30) and addressed media inquiries before the event, stating that Taiwan's industrial health is more important than stock fluctuations. 'Don’t just stare at the red and green Christmas lights every day,' he said, emphasizing that industry is Taiwan's foundation and that industrial development should not be equated with stock market performance, which is influenced by international capital flows, oil prices, and wars.

Tung explained that while the smartphone market has matured and growth has plateaued, global smartphone shipments from 2016 to 2025 have remained largely flat. However, product value continues to rise through advanced camera modules, display technologies, and integration of cutting-edge AI features.

Regarding foldable smartphones, Tung noted that Korean brands have launched such devices for years but still face technical shortcomings. Drawing from personal experience, he mentioned that repeated folding can cause the central hinge to break. On reports of Apple launching a foldable device this year, he expressed confidence that Apple would only enter the market if it had achieved sufficient technological readiness.
