U.S. stocks surged across the board on the 30th, triggering a strong rebound in Asian equity and foreign exchange markets on the 31st. Taiwan's stock market (Taiwan Weighted Index) soared more than 3,000 points, while the New Taiwan Dollar (TWD) appreciated steadily against the U.S. dollar. The TWD closed up 1.62 jiao (0.5%) at 32.292, marking its largest single-day gain in over three months. Total trading volume in the Taipei and Yuan Ta foreign exchange markets reached $4.049 billion.
The TWD strengthened sharply today, breaking through the 32.4 and 32.3 levels, closing at 32.292. For the week, it gained 6.6 fen (0.2%), ending a five-week losing streak. However, for July, it depreciated by 4.55 jiao (1.4%), resulting in two consecutive monthly losses.
Looking at major currencies' performance against the U.S. dollar, the U.S. Dollar Index dropped 0.87%, while Asian currencies rebounded strongly. The Japanese yen surged 2.2%, the Singapore dollar rose 0.71%, the South Korean won gained 0.64%, the TWD appreciated 0.50%, and the Chinese yuan rose 0.14%.
In Taipei, both stocks and forex staged a sharp recovery. TSMC hit an unprecedented daily limit-up at NT$2,425 (up NT$220), driving the Taiwan Weighted Index to close up 3,186.45 points at 43,119.75—the largest single-day point gain in history.
