According to Barron’s, SpaceX (SPCX-US) shares hit a new low since going public on Friday (July 31), falling approximately 20% from its IPO price set just six weeks earlier. Surprisingly, this stock had rocketed upward on its first trading day, only to quickly reverse those gains.
SpaceX closed down 3.4% on Friday at $108.37, briefly touching $107.01 during the session. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.7% and 0.5%, respectively, that same day.
Before Friday’s opening bell, SpaceX’s share price had already declined 17% from its $135 IPO price.
For investors, the stock price is naturally the top concern right now. But for CEO Elon Musk, beyond capital markets, he must overcome a series of technical challenges to realize SpaceX’s ultimate vision.
Musk aims for SpaceX’s large, fully reusable rocket, Starship, to launch thousands of times annually in the future. This goal is highly ambitious, but achieving it will require numerous critical technological breakthroughs.
Starship’s Thermal Protection System Under Scrutiny
One of the most discussed issues currently is the thousands of small hexagonal heat-shield tiles protecting Starship’s upper stage from burning up during atmospheric re-entry.
Starship’s thermal protection system (TPS) uses technology inspired by the Space Shuttle. These tiles are made of silica-based ceramic material capable of withstanding temperatures up to 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit (about 1,650 degrees Celsius).
Any spacecraft returning to Earth will inevitably suffer some damage to its heat shield, necessitating inspection. One of SpaceX’s recent Starship test objectives was to collect TPS data to continuously improve the technology and design.
Earlier in July, during Starship’s 13th test flight, the upper-stage rocket splashed down in the Indian Ocean without exploding—an outcome that greatly excited Musk. Explosions after tests are not uncommon or unexpected. Because the rocket remained intact, SpaceX was able to retrieve more TPS data.
However, after the test, several NASA scientists posted on LinkedIn questioning whether the current TPS technology is sufficient to support rapid reusability.
Charles Miller, Dan Rasky, and Charles Camarda wrote, 'Based on data from the most recent Starship flight, we believe the current thermal protection system (TPS) technology has reached a dead end and cannot enable true full and rapid reusability.'
They noted that while the current TPS functions properly, the tiles still require inspection and replacement after every flight. This means each Starship could potentially spend days or even weeks in a repair facility.
At first glance, this might not seem like a major issue. However, Starship’s goal is to reduce the cost of reaching orbit by over 90% compared to the already low-cost and partially reusable Falcon 9 rocket. Rapid reusability is thus a crucial factor for SpaceX to keep costs down.
If Starship cannot be reused as frequently as planned, SpaceX will need to build more Starships to meet its goal of thousands of annual launches. Building more Starships could also slow down the company’s progress in developing space communications and AI-related businesses.
Such delays pose a significant risk to the stock market. Currently, SpaceX’s $1 trillion valuation is heavily dependent on the expectation that Starship will drive rapid revenue growth for the company.
Of course, SpaceX itself is well aware that the heat shield still needs continuous improvement. Musk has discussed this technology multiple times over the past few years on the X platform.
Moreover, SpaceX’s ability to improve rocket technology is unmatched in the industry. Investors may believe the company will eventually solve the heat shield issue and continue advancing the technology. Still, investors should closely monitor developments related to the TPS.
However, analysts suggest the heat shield issue may not be the primary reason for SpaceX’s stock decline. Investors are currently more concerned about the company’s high valuation and the upcoming expiration of the IPO lock-up period, which will allow early investors’ shares to be released into the market, increasing supply and potentially creating additional selling pressure.
