Amazon (AMZN-US) reached a market capitalization of over $3 trillion on Monday (March 3), fueled by robust financial results and sustained artificial intelligence (AI) momentum boosting demand for its cloud computing division, Amazon Web Services (AWS). This makes Amazon the fifth company—after Apple (AAPL-US), Microsoft (MSFT-US), NVIDIA (NVDA-US), and Alphabet (GOOGL-US)—to surpass the $3 trillion valuation milestone.

Amazon shares closed up 4.6% at $284.02 per share on Monday, briefly rising 5% to $285.01 during trading, setting a new all-time high. The stock has gained over 23% year-to-date.

Following Amazon’s recent earnings release, its stock posted the largest single-day gain since April 2012, primarily due to AWS revenue growing 37% year-over-year—the fastest pace in over four years. The company also raised its full-year capital expenditure forecast.

Markets had previously worried that hyperscalers might slow down AI investments, but both Amazon and Microsoft’s latest earnings reports indicate continued strong demand for AI infrastructure, significantly improving investor sentiment.

"Amazon is arguably the best reflection of today’s economy," said Hackett, Chief Market Strategist at Nationwide. "It represents both consumer demand and AI advancement."

He added that the biggest pre-earnings concern was whether hyperscalers would begin cutting back on AI spending. However, Amazon and Microsoft’s results show no such signs, reinforcing confidence that AI investment trends will persist.

Buoyed by Amazon’s performance, other major tech stocks rose on Monday: Microsoft climbed 4%, Meta Platforms (META-US) surged 6%, Alphabet (GOOGL-US) advanced 3.6%, and Oracle (ORCL-US) gained 5%.

Microsoft recently stated it expects to maintain positive cash flow through fiscal year 2027, with capital expenditures below Wall Street expectations—driving its largest single-day gain since 2008.

However, financial pressures from AI investments are diverging across companies. Tesla (TSLA-US) and Alphabet reported negative free cash flow last quarter, with Alphabet posting its first-ever negative reading. Meta’s free cash flow plummeted 91%, highlighting how billions are being poured into expanding AI infrastructure.

"The market is beginning to differentiate who among the 'Magnificent Seven' are real winners versus losers," said Hackett. "For a long time, investors treated them as one entity, but now they’re being priced based on fundamentals—a healthy development."

Companies that have reached or exceeded a $3 trillion market cap include Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, NVIDIA, and Amazon. NVIDIA currently holds the title of the world’s most valuable company, with a market cap nearing $5 trillion.

Founded by Jeff Bezos in 1994, Amazon took just about two years to add $1 trillion in market value after first crossing the $2 trillion mark in June 2024.

AWS has aggressively expanded its partnership network, signing cloud computing and AI chip supply agreements with leading AI firms including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta, benefiting directly from rapidly growing AI compute demand.

Nonetheless, to sustain high market expectations, Amazon must continue delivering strong cloud performance, especially as AI investments consume significant cash. The company has raised its 2026 capital expenditure forecast from $200 billion to $220 billion, while its free cash flow over the past 12 months remains negative at $7.6 billion.
