According to Barron's, Nvidia (NVDA-US) shares closed higher on Monday (3rd), reversing earlier intraday losses. However, the chip giant's stock appears to still need a strong earnings report to truly break out of its current consolidation phase.
Nvidia's stock finished up 2.9%, closing at $206.64, with an intraday high of $208.74. Over the past three months, the stock has largely traded sideways, gaining only 1.1% cumulatively.
So far this earnings season, there has been no clear catalyst for Nvidia. Although several tech giants have raised their capital expenditure forecasts, the market is beginning to question whether Nvidia will remain the primary beneficiary, as rising costs for other AI hardware components—such as memory chips—could divert investment budgets away from GPUs.
A larger concern is that the overall AI investment boom is showing signs of cooling due to rising borrowing costs, making it difficult for Nvidia's stock to sustain upward momentum.
Additionally, Nvidia's recent move to provide financing to AI startups through its balance sheet—described by Barron's as 'acting as both a venture capitalist and a central bank'—has raised market skepticism.
Stephen Coltman, Head of Macro Research at 21Shares, noted in a report: 'Many companies that once had extremely strong cash flows are now taking on significant debt to invest in AI infrastructure. Even Nvidia, with its high profitability and massive market cap, has reportedly provided hundreds of billions of dollars in supplier financing and credit guarantees to customers, leading to a widening of its credit spread.'
Nonetheless, the market still anticipates Nvidia's upcoming earnings report on August 26 as a potential catalyst for a breakout, provided investors perceive the current stock price as sufficiently attractive.
According to FactSet, the average Wall Street analyst target price for Nvidia is $314.29.
Year-to-date, Nvidia's stock has risen 10.8%, and over the past 12 months, it has gained 14.8%.
