Taiwan's stock market soared on May 5, driven by strong gains in electronics blue-chip stocks, ABF substrate manufacturers, optical communications, and IPC (industrial PC) sectors. The index surged as much as 1,619 points intraday, peaking at 44,980.31, with a high-low range of 1,170.48 points. It reclaimed both the monthly and quarterly moving averages. The market closed at 44,611.6, up 1,250.94 points (+2.88%), with trading volume expanding to TWD 1.14 trillion, returning to the trillion-level threshold.
All major weighted stocks returned to bullish territory. TSMC (2330-TW) rose TWD 85 (+3.5%) to close at TWD 2,405. MediaTek (2454-TW) gained TWD 135 (+3.5%) to TWD 4,000. Hon Hai (2317-TW) rose approximately 3%. Delta Electronics (2308-TW) and ASE Holding (3711-TW) each gained about 1%.
The ABF substrate trio surged strongly: Kinsus (3189-TW) rose approximately 7%, Unimicron (3037-TW) about 4%, and Nanya PCB (8046-TW) about 1%.
Memory stocks were lifted by rising pricing trends. Powerchip (6770-TW) hit the daily trading limit, Winbond (2344-TW) rose approximately 7%, and Nanya Technology (2408-TW) gained about 2%.
Optical communications stocks surged on news that the U.S. may ban Chinese optical transceivers. Win Semiconductors (3105-TW), Powertech Technology (3163-TW), IET-KY (4971-TW), United Components (3450-TW), and United Silicon (3081-TW) all hit the upper limit.
The industrial PC sector benefited from the commercialization of Edge AI. Market leader Advantech (2395-TW) and AAEON (6579-TW) both reached the daily limit, while Quanta Storage (6414-TW) rose approximately 7%.
