The Trump administration in the United States is reportedly considering a ban on importing new Chinese data center hardware, including optical transceivers used in AI data centers. This news triggered a broad rally in US optical communication stocks on Tuesday (April 4), with shares of AAOI (AAOI-US), Lumentum (LITE-US), and Coherent (Corp-US) surging. The momentum carried into Wednesday (April 5), lifting multiple Taiwanese optical communication stocks, including Qian Ding (4908-TW), Lian Jun (3450-TW), Lian Ya (3081-TW), Borowin (3163-TW), and Huagang Light (4979-TW), all to their daily trading limits.

According to Reuters, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which oversees the telecommunications industry, is drafting measures to prohibit the import of new Chinese-made optical transceiver modules. Officials aim to announce the policy in 2026, with formal implementation following the announcement. Following the news, AAOI soared 19.44%, Lumentum rose 8.92%, and Coherent gained over 12.27% in after-hours trading on Tuesday.

In Wednesday’s trading session, buoyed by the strong performance of US optical communication leaders, stocks including Qian Ding, Lian Jun, Lian Ya, Borowin, Huagang Light, and Zhongda-KY (4977-TW) all surged to their daily price limits. Lian Ya opened sharply higher and quickly reached its limit price of 2,160 TWD, a gain of 195 TWD, marking its third consecutive trading day at the upper limit. The rally pushed its share price back above the 2,000 TWD threshold and to a one-month high.

Other companies, including Shang Quan (4979-TW), Lide Optoelectronics-KY (4979-TW), Dongdian Optoelectronics (4979-TW), and Guangsheng (4979-TW), also briefly surged more than half of the daily limit.

Analysts note that this US measure is expected to benefit domestic American manufacturers of optical transceiver modules, with Taiwanese suppliers in the ecosystem likely to continue gaining. Additionally, the US ban on new Chinese-made data center equipment is anticipated to negatively impact the financial performance of Zhongji旭創 (300308-CN), the world’s largest optical transceiver module supplier based in China.
