Semiconductor foundry GlobalFoundries (GFS-US) announced its 2026 fiscal second-quarter financial results (ending June 30) on Wednesday (May 5). Benefiting from the demand for AI data centers, the company's revenue and adjusted earnings per share both exceeded Wall Street expectations.

GlobalFoundries' second-quarter revenue was $1.79 billion, surpassing the LSEG-analyzed average analyst estimate of $1.77 billion. Adjusted diluted earnings per share were $0.46, also exceeding the market expectation of $0.44.

GlobalFoundries primarily produces specialty application chips, which are widely used in communications, data centers, automotive, industrial, and consumer electronics. As technology companies expand their AI infrastructure investments, demand for GlobalFoundries' silicon photonics chips is gradually increasing.

Silicon photonics technology uses optical signals to replace traditional electrical signals for data transmission, improving data transfer speeds and reducing energy consumption in AI data centers. As AI models scale up and computing systems need to connect more processors, high-speed and energy-efficient data transmission technologies are becoming increasingly important, also becoming a new growth driver for GlobalFoundries.

Looking ahead to the third quarter, GlobalFoundries estimates revenue of $1.89 billion, with a range of ±$250 million, roughly in line with analysts' estimates of $1.88 billion. Based on the company's forecast range, third-quarter revenue could fall between $1.865 billion and $1.915 billion.

However, GlobalFoundries' second-quarter adjusted free cash flow was negative $300 million, significantly lower than the positive $2.77 billion from the same period last year, indicating that despite revenue and profit exceeding expectations, the company still faces pressure on cash flow.

Additionally, in March, GlobalFoundries sued Israeli peer Tower Semiconductor, alleging infringement of 11 semiconductor manufacturing patents related to chips used in smartphones and other electronic products. This patent dispute is still ongoing.

Before the deadline, GlobalFoundries (GFS-US) saw its stock price fall 4.17% during Wednesday's trading, temporarily reported at $49.85 per share.
