Leopold Aschenbrenner, a 25-year-old former OpenAI researcher and rising Wall Street investor, has brought his hedge fund Situational Awareness back into the investment arena just days after facing near-collapse, committing $400 million to a private company.
In early July, Situational Awareness managed assets worth as much as $45 billion. However, the rapid decline in value of its publicly traded tech stock holdings triggered massive margin calls from Wall Street lending institutions. To cope with the financial pressure, Aschenbrenner briefly considered selling off prized private equity stakes in companies such as Anthropic, Fluidstack, and MatX. Ultimately, he reached an agreement with Ken Griffin’s Citadel, selling off most of his listed stock portfolio to repay loans while preserving his private equity positions.
This came at a steep cost. By last Thursday, the fund’s assets had plummeted to approximately $10 billion, wiping out the substantial gains previously earned through leveraged bets under a wave of margin calls.
Despite the significant setback, Aschenbrenner quickly demonstrated his determination to return to the market. According to insiders, the fund invested $400 million into a private company this past Tuesday—an additional commitment following a $100 million investment made last month. While the specific recipient company remains undisclosed, the move is widely seen as an initial signal of his intent to rebuild the fund through long-term value investing.
Situational Awareness has a unique investor base, primarily composed of wealthy individuals and family offices from the San Francisco Bay Area, including notable figures such as Dan Sundheim, founder of D1 Capital. Despite the recent turmoil, there have been no signs of large-scale withdrawals so far.
In a letter to investors, Aschenbrenner pledged that nearly all of his personal assets are invested in the fund and vowed to learn from this experience to become a stronger investor.
Notably, on the very Saturday when the fund faced its most intense turmoil, Aschenbrenner held his wedding in Carmel Valley, California. His wife currently serves as Chief of Staff to the CEO of Anthropic. Dubbed the 'AI royal wedding,' the celebration unfolded simultaneously with the fund’s survival battle, creating a dramatic juxtaposition. He has since canceled his honeymoon and is personally calling each concerned investor to reassure them.
