U.S. President Trump will convene senior executives from some of the world's largest mining companies at the U.S. State Department on Friday, July 7, aiming to take action to secure the supply of critical minerals for the United States and its allies.
Industry giants expected to attend include global mining leaders Rio Tinto, Australia's BHP, U.S.-based Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, MP Materials (Mountain Pass), American Rare Earths, Energy Fuels, and Canada's Metals Company.
According to sources, the Trump administration plans to announce several deals and memorandums of understanding during the meeting.
As reported by Reuters, the U.S. is urgently seeking critical minerals to replenish weapon stockpiles depleted during the ongoing conflict with Iran. Over the course of more than five months of military operations, the U.S. military has heavily consumed precision-guided missiles and anti-aircraft interceptors.
U.S. defense officials and lawmakers have warned that, given current production capacity constraints, replenishing certain stockpiles could take several years—despite the Trump administration denying reports of 'severe ammunition shortages.'
Pentagon officials and defense contractors have revealed that minerals such as rare earths, tungsten, germanium, and scandium are essential for manufacturing precision-guided missiles, fighter jets, armored vehicles, infrared sensors, and other advanced weapons systems.
