Hong Kong stocks rose on Monday, but turnover declined, and southbound funds turned net buyers. The Hang Seng Index is expected to consolidate in the short term, fluctuating narrowly between 25,000 and 26,000 points.
2) Summary of Monday's China and Hong Kong Market Conditions
The Hang Seng Index opened 137 points higher on Monday, traded in a narrow range during the morning, and gradually rose in the afternoon to close near its intraday high at 25,937 points, up 269 points or 1.0%. Turnover decreased by 7% from the previous day to HK$240.3 billion, compared to an average daily turnover of HK$307.2 billion in July.
Southbound funds via the Stock Connect turned net buyers of approximately HK$2.0 billion. Minimax (100), Kingboard Laminates (1888), and Genscript Biotech (1548) recorded net inflows of HK$1.01 billion, HK$600 million, and HK$470 million, respectively. Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC, 981) saw net outflows of HK$450 million. Cumulative net inflows since August have reached approximately HK$12 billion, compared to about HK$62.9 billion in July.
The Hang Seng Index rose 1.0%, with 79 constituent stocks rising, 13 falling, and 1 unchanged. Lao Feng Xiang Gold (6181) and Chow Tai Fook (1929) surged over 12% and 6%, respectively, leading the gains among blue chips. Hansoh Pharmaceutical (3692), Nongfu Spring (9633), and Shenzhou International (2313) rose over 4%. Zijin Mining (2899), Geely Automobile (175), and Tingyi (322) gained over 3%. MTR Corporation (66), Wharf Real Estate (1997), China Shenhua (1088), WuXi AppTec (2359), Innovent Biologics (1801), and Li Ning (2331) rose over 2%. Henderson Land (101) and Henderson Land Development (12) rose nearly 2%. China Life (2628) and Pop Mart (9992) fell over 2%, the worst performers among blue chips.洛阳钼业 (3993) declined over 1%.
The Hang Seng Tech Index rose 1.3%, closing at 4,919 points, with 27 components rising and 3 falling. All major tech stocks advanced: Meituan (3690) rose over 1%, Alibaba (9988), Xiaomi (1810), and JD.com (9618) rose over 2%. Lenovo (992) surged over 3%, the largest gain among constituents. BYD (1211), NIO (9866), JD Health (6618), Alibaba Health (241), Trip.com (9961), Midea Group (300), and Bilibili (9626) rose over 2%. Horizon Robotics (9660), XPeng (9868), and Haier Smart Home (6690) rose over 1%. Hua Hong Semiconductor (1347) fell over 2%, the worst performer. SMIC (981) and Minimax (100) declined over 1%.
By sector, chip and domestic insurance stocks declined. Hua Hong Semiconductor (1347) and SMIC (981) fell over 2% and 1%, respectively. China Life (2628) fell over 2%.
Gold, coal, paper products, and online healthcare stocks outperformed the market. Zhaojin Mining (1818) rose over 4%, Zijin Mining (2899) and Shandong Gold (1787) rose over 3%. China Coal Energy (1898) and Yankuang Energy (1171) rose over 4% and 3%, respectively. Nine Dragons Paper (2689) and Lee & Man Paper (2314) rose over 4% and 2%, respectively. JD Health (6618) and Alibaba Health (241) rose over 2%.
On Monday, the Shanghai Composite Index opened 0.1% higher, briefly rose 0.7% in the morning, dipped into negative territory in the afternoon, and rebounded late to close near its intraday high at 3,966.59 points, up 0.7%. The Shenzhen Component Index was flat. The STAR 50 Index fell 0.4%. Total turnover in the Shanghai and Shenzhen markets was approximately RMB 2.52 trillion, down about RMB 140 billion from the previous day. The average daily turnover in July was about RMB 2.68 trillion.
3) Stock-Specific News
Yum China (9987) announced that its net profit for the six months ended June 30 was USD 553 million, up 9.1% year-on-year; basic earnings per share were USD 1.58; and a quarterly dividend of 29 cents was declared. Total revenue during the period was USD 6.409 billion, up 11.1% year-on-year, driven primarily by a 4% net increase in store count and 1% same-store sales growth. (Hong Kong Economic Journal)
