The Trump administration has announced new tariffs on foreign-made drones and critical components to reduce U.S. dependence on Chinese supply chains and accelerate domestic production capacity. The policy announcement drove U.S. drone and defense stocks sharply higher on Friday (14th), with Unusual Machines (UMAC-US) surging over 24%, becoming a market focal point.
According to measures released by the White House, large drones equipped with militarily sensitive functions such as thermal imaging, along with components deemed critical, will face a 100% tariff. Smaller drones and components with lower sensitivity will be subject to a 25% rate.
Products from specific countries such as Japan and the United Kingdom may qualify for lower tariffs. Most new tariffs are expected to take effect in September, while less sensitive drones and components will be delayed by six months.
The White House stated that drones have become a critical technology in modern armed conflicts, and the U.S. must rapidly increase domestic production to safeguard national and economic security.
This policy marks the latest move by the Trump administration to bring manufacturing back to the U.S. By raising import costs through tariffs, the administration aims to create more market space for domestic suppliers and reduce reliance on Chinese manufacturing in both defense and commercial drone industries.
A 2024 study by the Atlantic Council estimated that Chinese companies control about 90% of the U.S. drone market and approximately 80% globally, highlighting the extreme concentration of U.S. supply chains in China.
Unusual Machines Leads Drone-Related Stock Gains
Following the tariff announcement, investors rushed to buy shares of U.S.-based drone and defense companies. Unusual Machines (UMAC-US) surged over 24%.
In 2024, the company disclosed that Donald Trump Jr., son of former President Trump, serves as an advisor. Another regulatory filing revealed that Donald Trump Jr. holds 331,580 shares of Unusual Machines.
Other drone and defense stocks also rose:
- Red Cat (RCAT-US) up over 8% - AeroVironment (AVAV-US) up about 2% - Kratos Defense & Security Solutions (KTOS-US) up about 3% - Northrop Grumman (NOC-US) up about 2% - Aevex (AVEX-US) up about 2% - Ondas Holdings (ONDS-US) up about 3.6%
Ondas reported its second-quarter earnings on Thursday, with mixed results, but its stock rose alongside the sector due to heightened optimism about the domestic drone industry’s prospects under the new tariffs.
U.S. Expands Support for Domestic Drone Industry
Beyond tariff hikes, the U.S. government is also expanding domestic drone production through budget allocations and procurement programs. The U.S. Department of Defense launched a $1 billion 'Drone Dominance' initiative in December last year to accelerate domestic drone manufacturing and deployment.
Trump’s proposed fiscal year 2027 budget allocates $1.5 trillion for defense spending, with enhanced U.S. drone production highlighted as a key priority.
Combined with defense procurement and budget support, the new tariffs signal that the Trump administration is supporting domestic industry through multiple avenues—import restrictions, government funding, and supply chain restructuring. Markets expect U.S. drone manufacturers to benefit from rising import costs and sustained growth in government orders and defense demand.
