Tesla (TSLA-US) is reportedly making new progress on its long-delayed second-generation Roadster. U.S. tech media The Information reported that Tesla could unveil the redesigned Roadster as early as August 2025. The news drove Tesla's stock up nearly 1% during morning trading on Friday the 14th, closing 0.68% higher at $342.27 per share.
The biggest highlight of this unveiling may not be traditional specs like range or acceleration, but rather the 'flying' concept repeatedly teased by Elon Musk. According to reports, Tesla may demonstrate the Roadster at SpaceX's facility in Texas, using special technology to achieve brief hovering effects.
However, it remains unclear whether this technology will truly enable flight or how much of it will be retained in the final production model. The official launch date, detailed specifications, and delivery schedule are all still uncertain.
'Flying' Version May Be Limited Edition, Priced in Six Figures
If Tesla ultimately releases a Roadster equipped with hovering or flight-related technology, the vehicle may be produced in limited quantities, targeting only a select group of high-end buyers rather than Tesla's general consumer base.
Reports suggest the special version could cost six-figure dollars or more and may not be suitable for everyday road use. In other words, this Roadster is more likely to serve as a high-performance experimental vehicle showcasing Tesla and SpaceX's technological capabilities, rather than a mass-market product aimed at high sales volume.
First Revealed in 2017, Delayed at Least Eight Times
The Roadster holds a special place in Tesla's development history. The first-generation model, based on the Lotus Elise platform, was sold between 2008 and 2012, with an actual range of about 200 miles and total production of approximately 2,450 units. It helped Tesla establish its market position as an EV manufacturer during its early years.
Tesla unveiled the prototype of the second-generation Roadster in 2017, claiming the new car would exceed 250 mph in top speed, offer around 620 miles of range, and feature extremely rapid acceleration.
However, the launch of this next-generation sports car has been repeatedly postponed, with at least eight delays to date. Even if Tesla unveils the redesigned version in August, the actual production and delivery timeline remains to be confirmed by the company.
