The Taiwan stock market showed a volatile upward trend on the 20th. It opened at 44,942.01 points and briefly rose to 45,160.05 points before turning negative and dropping to 44,446.36 points. However, the market recovered as TSMC ended in positive territory and shipping stocks rallied collectively.
Ultimately, the index closed up 214.39 points (0.48%) at 44,933.74 points. Although it failed to reclaim the psychological 45,000-point level, it successfully recovered the 20-day moving average, indicating improved investor sentiment. Trading volume declined to NT$792.96 billion compared to the previous day.
Among electronics stocks, performances diverged. TSMC (2330-TW) gained NT$25 (1.06%), closing at NT$2,375. Hon Hai (2317-TW) rose 0.61%, and ASE (3711-TW) gained 0.34%. In contrast, MediaTek (2454-TW) fell over 3%, Delta Electronics (2308-TW) and Quanta Computer (2382-TW) dropped more than 1%, while United Microelectronics (2303-TW) ended flat.
Shipping stocks surged on signs of recovery in container and bulk shipping markets. Wan Hai (2615-TW) rose over half a stop-up limit, while Evergreen (2603-TW) and Yang Ming (2609-TW) both gained over 2%. Hui-Yang KY (2637-TW) climbed over 3%, and Rong Yuen (2607-TW) and Bulk Hwa (2606-TW) posted gains of 1% to 2%.
Memory-related stocks rose following SK Hynix's announcement of a 40-trillion-won share buyback. Nanya Technology (2408-TW) and Winbond (2344-TW) gained over half a stop-up limit, while Macronix (2377-TW) and PSMC (3006-TW) rose over 2%. Phison (8299-TW), Powerchip (6770-TW), and ADATA (3260-TW) all gained over 1%.
Biotech stocks also advanced, with PharmaEssentia (6472-TW), Her-Own (7799-TW), Polaris Biotechnology KY (6550-TW), and Tai Tsung (4169-TW) hitting their daily upper limits. KPCB (6919-TW) rose over half a stop-up limit, and National Research Institute (4142-TW) gained over 4%.
Defense-related stocks rose after the full drone budget was approved. Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation (2634-TW) gained over half a stop-up limit, while Thunder Tiger (8033-TW) and EVA Airspace (2645-TW) both rose over 1%.
