Amid continued capital inflows, the New Taiwan Dollar (TWD) maintained an appreciating trend throughout the day on Friday (28th), closing at 31.628 TWD per USD, an 8-cent appreciation. The trading volume at Taipei Foreign Exchange Brokers reached USD 1.68 billion, marking the fifth consecutive week of appreciation, with a cumulative gain of 7.3 cents.
The TWD opened at 31.69 (up 1.8 cents) and reached a high of 31.57 during the session, with a daily trading range of 1.2 cents.
Among major Asian currencies, the South Korean Won surged nearly 0.7%, while the TWD rose 0.25%. The Singapore Dollar and Chinese Yuan appreciated slightly by around 0.05%, while the Japanese Yen depreciated approximately 0.15% and the Thai Baht fell 0.2%.
Institutional analysts noted that markets continue to closely monitor the U.S. Federal Reserve's monetary policy and the direction of U.S. Treasury yields. Meanwhile, Taiwan's stock market has demonstrated strong resilience through healthy sector rotation.
Latest U.S. economic data showed that July's durable goods orders rose 1.1% month-on-month, significantly surpassing the market expectation of 0.5%, indicating robust investment momentum. However, the July PCE inflation rate remained unchanged at 3.7% year-on-year, suggesting a stall in disinflation. As a result, market participants are closely watching the upcoming speech by Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell at the central bank symposium, which is expected to significantly influence movements in both stock and foreign exchange markets.
