Handling large laundry items at home is difficult. Can laundromats be an accessible solution?

Daily laundry is an unavoidable household chore.

There are many times when laundry feels like a hassle, such as during the pollen and yellow sand seasons, the long rainy season, or when the amount of laundry increases due to a growing family.

So, what are the common dissatisfactions with everyday laundry?

Also, to what extent are laundromats accepted as a solution to these problems?

Therefore, in collaboration with Tsujisho Planning Co., Ltd., which manages and operates laundromats, we conducted a survey of 500 men and women nationwide regarding 'troubles and stress in everyday laundry.'

37.6% replied that their biggest laundry trouble is 'unable to wash large items like blankets and curtains'

First, we asked about the troubles and stress felt in everyday laundry.

The most common answer was 'unable to wash large items like blankets and curtains' at 37.6%.

This was followed by 'the hassle of hanging and taking in laundry' at 36.6% and 'concerns about the damp smell' at 33.8%.

Looking at the top three items, it is clear that many people have concerns about the capacity of home washing machines and drying.

Large items like blankets and curtains can be difficult to wash in a home washing machine.

In addition, the effort required to hang and bring in laundry, as well as the damp smell caused by incomplete drying, also seem to contribute to daily stress.

65.2% replied they 'do not think' they would pay for shortening washing/drying time

Next, we asked if they would be willing to pay if the time required for washing and drying could be shortened.

As a result, 37.6% said 'I don't really think so (I want to prioritize cheapness even if it takes time),' and 27.6% said 'I don't think so at all.' Combined, 65.2% responded that they are not proactive about paying money to save time.

On the other hand, 26.2% said 'I somewhat think so' and 8.6% said 'I strongly think so (I consider time as a cost).' More than 30% of the respondents believe it is acceptable to pay a cost if they can shorten the time taken for washing and drying.

Overall, the majority prioritizes low cost.

However, a certain number of people find value in time itself, suggesting that attitudes toward laundry are divided into 'cost-first' and 'efficiency-first.'

45.6% replied they 'have used a laundromat'

Now, what about the experience of using laundromats?

Next, we asked if they had ever used a laundromat.

As a result, 45.6% said 'I have used one.'

Meanwhile, 12.0% said 'I have never used one, but I would like to,' and 42.4% said 'I have never used one and do not want to use one in the future.'

Combining those with experience and those who want to try it, 57.6% have some level of interest in laundromats, indicating that more than half of the respondents consider them.

It appears that a certain number of people consider laundromats as an option for washing large items that are difficult to wash at home or when they want to finish everything up to drying at once.

56.9% said the main reason for using a laundromat is 'washing large items like futons and blankets'
