Growing Presence of Single-Story Homes: What Drives the Need?

When considering buying a home or moving in the future, the number of floors is as important as the layout and location. Recently, single-story homes have gained attention for their convenience and ease of living with an eye toward retirement.

To understand how future homeowners view this option, NEXER Inc. and Cuore Home Co., Ltd. surveyed 74 men and women across Japan who are planning to buy or move, regarding their interest in single-story homes.

64.9% Express Interest in Single-Story Homes

When asked about their level of interest, 31.1% said they were 'very interested' and 33.8% said they were 'somewhat interested,' totaling 64.9%. This shows that two out of three people considering a move or purchase are interested in single-story houses.

Conversely, 16.2% were 'not very interested' and 18.9% were 'not interested at all.'

Reasons from interested respondents included: ease of living, sense of unity for the family, dreams of relaxing on a spacious lot, potential for lower construction costs, and mobility ease even if physical health declines.

Reasons from uninterested respondents included: wasted space, preference for apartment living, and the impression that single-story homes require large lots.

62.2% Cite 'Barrier-Free, Low-Step Access' as a Key Advantage

When asked about the advantages of single-story houses, the top answer was 'barrier-free, low-step access' at 62.2%. Other key benefits included 'easier to live in during old age' (54.1%), 'simple living flow for housework' (45.9%), 'seismic resilience' (40.5%), and 'lower risk of falling due to no stairs' (33.8%).

These top results reflect a strong focus on daily safety and long-term livability. With barrier-free features and suitability for aging cited by over half the respondents, single-story homes are recognized as an option that supports both current and future lifestyles.
