The Overlooked Value of 'Garden Time'

For those living in detached homes, is there ever a moment when you simply want to breathe in the fresh air or relax in the garden? Opening a window to take a deep breath during a break from work or housework can be a great way to reset the body and mind. However, few households are equipped with outdoor spaces like wood decks or terraces. While there is a need to enjoy the outdoors, many homes lack the appropriate facilities.

Therefore, in collaboration with Ex-Shop, we conducted a survey of 400 men and women across Japan who own detached homes regarding their usage and potential needs for 'outdoor spaces.'

Survey Overview: 'Usage and Potential Needs for Outdoor Spaces' Method: Internet survey Period: April 24, 2026, to May 6, 2026 Target: Men and women across Japan who own detached homes Valid responses: 400 samples

50.8% Said They Have Moments Where They Want to Relax by Feeling the Outside Air

When asked how often they feel the need to relax at home by feeling the outside air, 25.8% said "multiple times a week," 15.0% said "about once a week," and 10.0% said "a few times a month," totaling 50.8%. On the other hand, 49.3% answered "almost never."

Over half of the respondents expressed a desire to feel the outside air while staying at home, indicating a clear need for outdoor residential spaces.

84.0% of Households Do Not Have a Wood Deck or Terrace

Next, we asked whether they currently have a wood deck or terrace. 16.0% answered "yes," while 84.0% answered "no." Even among those living in detached homes, less than 20% have a wood deck or terrace.
