Do "Desired Themes" for Cabaret Club Cosplay Events Differ Between Men and Women?

Many cabaret clubs incorporate cosplay to match seasonal events like Halloween and Christmas.

The sight of staff dressed in costumes different from their usual attire further enlivens the atmosphere of the establishment.

Cosplay itself comes in various types, from Japanese traditional wear and anime styles to the classic bunny girl.

So, do the themes that men and women find "want to see" or "seem like they would be exciting" for these cosplay events align? Or are there differences in preference?

Therefore, in collaboration with "vanity ME.", a select store with the industry's largest selection of cosplay costumes and cabaret dresses, we conducted a survey targeting 400 men and women nationwide about "Themes to See at Cabaret Club Cosplay Events."

Rather than sexiness, the desire to enjoy cuteness and atmosphere is evident. This perspective can be seen from the women's edition ranking.

[Men's Edition] Ranking of "Want to See / Seems Like It Would Be Exciting" Themes for Cabaret Club Cosplay Events!

◆1st Place: Chinese Dress 22 votes

Comments from survey respondents included:

* Cute. (20s, Male) * Because the silhouette looks beautiful. (30s, Male) * It makes your figure look good. (40s, Male) * Because the leg line looks beautiful. (40s, Male) * I think it's sexy. (40s, Male)

The 1st place in the men's edition was "Chinese Dress."

The unique silhouette that follows the body line and the design with a slit showing the legs gathered many votes.

Comments like "It makes your figure look good" and "Because the leg line looks beautiful" were common, indicating that it's valued as an outfit that enhances physical beauty.

This theme ranked low in the women's edition, making it the theme with the biggest difference in evaluation between men and women. The combination of cuteness and sexiness is likely the reason for its popularity among men.

◆2nd Place: Yukata / Summer Festival 20 votes

Comments from survey respondents included:

* Because it has a seasonal feel. (40s, Male) * Because it's refreshing. (40s, Male) * I like Japanese clothing. Casual yukata are more familiar than kimonos. (40s, Male) * I feel a sense of allure. (50s, Male) * I want to see how cabaret hostesses look in yukata. (50s, Male)

2nd place was "Yukata / Summer Festival."

Comments evoking a summer feel, such as "Because it has a seasonal feel" and "Because it's refreshing," were prominent.

Among Japanese traditional wear, yukata is approachable and feels relatively familiar.

Perhaps this is why it was supported as a theme that can be naturally enjoyed as a seasonal event, not just as cosplay.

Notably, "Yukata / Summer Festival" was also ranked 1st in the women's edition, making it one of the few common themes chosen by both men and women.

◆3rd Place: Bunny Girl 19 votes

Comments from survey respondents included:

* Because it's cute. (20s, Male) * Because it's sexy. (30s, Male) * Classic. (40s, Male) * I've seen it in anime and movies, but never in person, so I wanted to see it. (40s, Male) * Bunny girls from dramas, etc. (50s, Male)

3rd place was "Bunny Girl."

In addition to comments like "Because it's sexy" and "Because it's cute," the comment "Classic" was also seen, suggesting its enduring popularity as a staple of cosplay.

What's interesting is the reason, "I've seen it in videos but never in person."

The fact that it's seemingly familiar yet rarely encountered in reality might be one of the reasons bunny girls were chosen.

◆4th Place: Anime / Game Character Style 15 votes

Comments from survey respondents included:

* It seems like it would be a topic of conversation. (20s, Male) * I like it when it's a favorite character. (30s, Male) * Because there's a wide variety of costumes. (30s, Male) * Anime characters feel familiar and there seem to be many topics to discuss. (40s, Male) * When you say cosplay, I think of anime and games. (50s, Male)

4th place was "Anime / Game Character Style."

As the comment "When you say cosplay, I think of anime and games" indicates, it garnered strong support as a genre that can be considered the origin of cosplay. Comments like "There's a wide variety of costumes" and "It seems like it would be a topic of conversation" were also prominent, expressing expectations for increased excitement.

This theme also ranked tied for 3rd place in the women's edition, and it seems to have been supported by both men and women for the reason that "it would make conversations lively."

◆5th Place: Oiran / Japanese Traditional Wear 12 votes

Comments from survey respondents included:

* Because it seems like you can enjoy an atmosphere different from the usual. (30s, Male) * Because it's like Yoshiwara. (30s, Male) * Because I like Japanese style. (40s, Male) * Because it looks luxurious. (50s, Male)

5th place was "Oiran / Japanese Traditional Wear."

Comments like "Because it seems like you can enjoy an atmosphere different from the usual" and "Because it looks luxurious" were common, indicating expectations for a sense of the extraordinary and glamour.

Oiran costumes are rarely seen in everyday life.

Perhaps this is why it's chosen as a worldview that can only be experienced at special events.

Oiran, which ranked 2nd in the women's edition, also made it to 5th place in the men's edition. The splendor unique to Japanese traditional wear seems to be appreciated by both men and women.

◆6th to 8th Place

On the other hand, Japanese traditional wear like yukata and oiran also ranked high.

The desire to enjoy the seasonal feel and the sense of the extraordinary seems to be a common point with the women's responses.

◆Summary

In this survey, "Yukata / Summer Festival" was the only theme that ranked high for both men and women.

It was ranked 1st in the women's edition and 2nd in the men's edition, showing its popularity as a classic theme common to both genders.

On the other hand, there were also themes where a difference was observed between men and women.

"Chinese Dress" received 22 votes for 1st place in the men's edition, but was not ranked in the women's edition, showing the largest gender gap. Conversely, "Cat Ears / Animal Motif" was popular among women. It ranked tied for 3rd place with 14 votes in the women's edition but remained low in the men's edition.

While men tend to prioritize "glamour" and "allure," women tend to prioritize "cuteness" and "healing." Even for the same cosplay event, there are differences in what points attract men and women.

Considering what themes would allow everyone present to enjoy themselves,

why not think about the next event from this perspective?
