Survey on Hygiene of Winter Bedding
Comforter blankets, blankets, and carpets are essential for the cold season. They are things that warmly envelop our bodies and allow us to spend comfortable time.
However, many winter bedding items are large and difficult to wash at home.
Therefore, there may be cases where people are concerned about mites, odors, and accumulated dirt but have not been able to properly care for them.
Wouldn't many people be concerned about "Am I keeping it clean enough?"
So, this time, in collaboration with Nomura Cleaning, we conducted a survey on "Mites and Hygiene of Large Winter Laundry Items" targeting 500 men and women nationwide.

50.8% answered they "did not know" that kotatsu futons and carpets are prone to causing mites and allergies
First, we asked if people knew that kotatsu futons and carpets are prone to causing mites and allergies.
The results showed that 50.8% "did not know" and 49.2% "knew," with the responses split almost equally.
Kotatsu futons and carpets are items that come into frequent contact with the skin and tend to accumulate moisture.
Therefore, they tend to create an environment where mites are likely to occur.
On the other hand, the results of this survey revealed that nearly half of the respondents were unaware of these risks.
Perhaps because they are familiar items used daily, it is difficult to notice hygiene issues, and the need for care is overlooked.
55.0% responded that they have felt their winter bedding was "not washed hygienically"
Next, we asked if people had ever felt that their winter bedding, such as kotatsu futons, blankets, and carpets, was "not washed hygienically."
The results showed that 29.0% answered "sometimes" and 26.0% answered "often," totaling 55.0% who have experienced feeling that their winter bedding was "not washed hygienically."
On the other hand, 25.2% answered "never" and 19.8% answered "rarely."
It appears that over half of the people feel anxious about washing and caring for their winter bedding.
Many of these items are large and difficult to wash at home, so it is likely that many people find it challenging to maintain a clean state.
61.8% responded that the reason they felt their winter bedding was "not washed hygienically" was because they realized "it hadn't been washed for a long time."
Next, we asked those who felt their winter bedding was "not washed hygienically" what prompted that feeling.
The most common reason was realizing "it hadn't been washed for a long time," at 61.8%.
This was followed by "noticed an odor" at 31.3% and "saw black stains or dirt" at 28.4%.
It was found that many people become conscious of hygiene not so much from visible dirt, but from the realization that "it hadn't been washed for a long time."
Additionally, it seems that in many cases, people only become concerned after noticing actual changes like odors or black stains.
Since winter bedding is used daily, it may be important to be mindful of regular care, even if dirt or odors are not noticeable.
61.1% responded that the reason for not washing hygienically was "because it wouldn't fit in the washing machine."
Next, we asked those who felt their winter bedding was "not washed hygienically" the reasons why.
The most common reason was "because it wouldn't fit in the washing machine," at 61.1%.
This was followed by "it takes time and space to dry" at 38.9%, and "cleaning fees seem high" at 30.9%.
The results show that the biggest reason for not being able to wash winter bedding hygienically is its size.
It is difficult to handle with household washing machines, and many people may give up on washing it altogether.
Furthermore, the space and time required for drying, as well as the burden of transportation, are also factors that make care difficult. The "size" and "weight" of winter bedding increase the hurdle for daily care.
34.0% responded that they "have" wanted to have their kotatsu futon or carpet professionally cleaned by a specialist.
Next, we asked if people had ever wanted to have their kotatsu futon or carpet professionally cleaned by a specialist due to concerns about mites or odors.
The results showed that 9.2% answered "have wanted to many times" and 24.8% answered "have wanted to," totaling 34.0% who have had the experience of wanting to use professional cleaning services.
On the other hand, 31.0% answered "have not really wanted to" and 35.0% answered "have never wanted to."
The results indicate that more than one in three people have actively considered professional cleaning services.
It seems that many people are experiencing issues like mites and odors that are difficult to resolve with home washing alone.
Additionally, winter bedding items are large, and there are times when people feel the limitations of home care.
In such cases, professional cleaning may be considered as a way to reduce effort while maintaining a clean state.
40.6% responded that they "would like to use" professional cleaning that offers "mite removal" and "antibacterial processing."
Finally, we asked if people would want to use professional cleaning that offers "mite removal" and "antibacterial processing," even if it cost money and effort.
Antibacterial processing is a treatment that suppresses the growth of bacteria.
The results showed that 33.0% answered "would like to use if there's an opportunity" and 7.6% answered "definitely want to use," totaling 40.6% who were positive about using the service.
On the other hand, 31.4% answered "would not like to use" and 28.0% answered "would not really like to use."
We also asked for the reasons behind these opinions and will share some of them.
Reasons for wanting to use:
* Because it's not something an amateur can handle. (20s, Female) * Because it's difficult to do at home. (20s, Female) * Because it will be cleaner than washing at home. (30s, Male) * Because mites will likely be gone if washed by professional cleaning. (30s, Female) * Because my child has asthma. (30s, Female)
Reasons for not wanting to use:
* Because it seems expensive. (20s, Male) * Because I'm not particularly concerned or troubled, and I don't feel like paying to use it. (30s, Male) * Because I dislike the time it takes. (30s, Female) * Because I think I can just wash it at a nearby laundry mat without going that far. (30s, Female)
The results show that about 40% of people see value in professional "mite removal" and "antibacterial processing."
From the reasons given by those who want to use the service, we hear expectations for professional cleaning such as "Mites will likely be gone if washed by professional cleaning" and "It will be cleaner than washing at home."
In particular, many people likely feel that it is difficult to adequately care for mites and stubborn odors on their own. Additionally, some people consider hygiene and family health, such as "Because my child has asthma."
On the other hand, from those who do not want to use the service, we heard opinions such as "Because it seems expensive" and "Because I'm not particularly concerned or troubled, and I don't feel like paying to use it."
Financial circumstances also seem to be an important factor in using specialist services.
Although opinions are divided, it is clear that many people find professional cleaning appealing precisely because winter bedding is difficult to wash at home. To continue using kotatsu futons, blankets, and carpets, which are used daily, in a cleaner state, it may be a good idea to consider professional cleaning once.
Summary
This survey found that 55.0% of people have experienced feeling that their winter bedding was "not washed hygienically." The main reasons cited were the difficulty of home care, such as "it wouldn't fit in the washing machine" and "it requires space and time to dry."
Furthermore, 40.6% of respondents expressed a desire to use professional cleaning services that offer mite removal and antibacterial processing.
Winter bedding items such as kotatsu futons, blankets, and carpets can be large and heavy, making it difficult to wash and dry them sufficiently at home. Therefore, it is possible that many people continue to use them with concerns about hygiene.
To maintain a clean and comfortable state, utilizing professional cleaning services as needed, in addition to home care, is a valid option.
If you are concerned about mites, bacteria, or odors, consider incorporating specialized care.
