Child Car Seats: Are They Installed Correctly? Let's Look at Installation Difficulties

Furthermore, you may have worried about whether it was installed correctly.

Therefore, in collaboration with the child car seat and baby product brand "AILEBEBE," we conducted a survey on "difficulties in installing and using child car seats" targeting 200 men and women nationwide who answered in a preliminary survey that they "have used a child car seat for their child."

55.5% Responded "Yes" to Feeling "Difficult" or "Time-Consuming" During Installation and Adjustment

First, we asked those who answered that they "have used a child car seat for their child" whether they had ever felt that installing or adjusting a child car seat was "difficult" or "time-consuming."

As a result, 19.5% answered "often," and 36.0% answered "sometimes," indicating that a combined 55.5% of people have experienced difficulty or trouble with installation and adjustment.

On the other hand, 25.0% answered "not often," and 19.5% answered "not at all."

Child car seats are essential items for protecting a child's life.

However, the results showed that more than half of people have experienced confusion or trouble during installation and adjustment.

While product design improvements are important, wouldn't further support, such as manuals and videos, lead to a safer environment for use?

57.7% Cited "Securing with Seatbelt" as the Most Difficult/Time-Consuming Situation

Next, we asked those who answered that they found installing or adjusting a child car seat "difficult" or "time-consuming" about the specific situations where they felt this way.

The most common answer was "Securing with seatbelt" at 57.7%.

This was followed by "Adjusting harness (shoulder belt) length" at 10.8%, and "Securing with ISOFIX," "Adjusting reclining angle," and "Compatibility/fit with vehicle model" all at 6.3%.

Nearly 60% of people felt difficulty or trouble with "securing with seatbelt."

Child car seats demonstrate their full safety performance when installed correctly.

Making installation methods clearer and enhancing support information could lead to a more secure usage environment.

63.1% Cited "Loading/Unloading in a Narrow Car Interior" as the Most Difficult Situation

Next, we asked those who answered that they found installing or adjusting a child car seat "difficult" or "time-consuming" about the situations they found difficult when loading or unloading their child into or out of the child car seat.

The most common answer was "Loading/unloading in a narrow car interior" at 63.1%.

This was followed by "When the child refuses to get into the child car seat" at 27.9%, "Tightening/adjusting the harness" at 27.0%, and "When loading a sleeping child into the seat" at 24.3%.

We also asked for specific examples of the most difficult situations, and here are some of them:

Most Difficult Situation and Reason:

- It's hard not to wake them up when they're sleeping. (20s, Female)

- The child refuses to get in, saying "no." (30s, Female)

- I'm not sure if it's closed properly, so it's difficult. (30s, Female)

- When the weather is bad, I can't hold an umbrella while putting the child in, so they inevitably get wet. (40s, Female)

- Securing the child's seatbelt in the narrow car interior. (40s, Male)

- It's difficult to carry them while they're heavy. (40s, Female)

"Loading/unloading in a narrow car interior" was the most cited difficult situation, with over 60% of respondents, indicating that many parents struggle in environments with limited car interior space.

On the other hand, it was also found that situations unique to childcare, such as children refusing to get in or having to place a sleeping child in the seat without waking them, contribute to the burden, not just the child car seat itself.

As it is an item used frequently, usability, such as ease of loading/unloading and operation, in addition to safety, seems to be an important point when choosing a child car seat.

54.9% Felt Information and Support for Confirmation Were "Insufficient"

Next, we asked those who answered that they found installing or adjusting a child car seat "difficult" or "time-consuming" whether they felt that information and support for confirming the correctness of installation were "insufficient."

As a result, 17.1% answered "felt very insufficient," and 37.8% answered "felt somewhat insufficient."

Combined, 54.9% felt that information and support were insufficient.

On the other hand, 37.8% answered "did not feel very insufficient," and 7.2% answered "did not feel insufficient at all."

Child car seats demonstrate their full safety performance when installed and used correctly.

Therefore, the result that more than half of people feel a lack of information and support for confirming installation methods is a point that cannot be overlooked.

Wouldn't it be possible to use child car seats with more peace of mind if an environment were established where installation methods could be easily confirmed through videos in addition to manuals?

52.3% Desired a "Mechanism for Easy Attachment/Detachment"

Finally, we asked those who answered that they found installing or adjusting a child car seat "difficult" or "time-consuming" about features or improvements they wished they had or "would have liked more of" in the child car seat.

The most common answer was "Mechanism for easy attachment/detachment" at 52.3%.

This was followed by "Slide function (improved ease of loading/unloading)" at 28.8%, "Lightweight/compact design" at 25.2%, and "Size adjustment function for long-term use" at 23.4%.

We asked for the specific features they most "wished they had" and the reasons, and here are some of the responses:

Most Desired Feature and Reason:

- It would be great if it were easy to wash since it gets dirty often. (20s, Female)

- Easy to switch out. (30s, Female)

- I'd be happier if it were a little lighter. (30s, Female)

- Easy to attach/detach and safe. (30s, Female)

- Improved adjustment function to accommodate children growing each year. It's costly. (40s, Female)

- A function to make getting in and out easier. (40s, Male)

It is clear that expectations are high for features that resolve the "difficulty of securing" and "trouble of loading/unloading" revealed in previous surveys.

In addition, free responses included many comments regarding daily usability, such as "lightweight," "washability," and "being able to use it for a long time according to the child's growth."

Child car seats are essential for protecting a child's safety.

Therefore, wouldn't a product with enhanced features that reduce daily burdens, as well as safety, lead to a more user-friendly product for parents?

Summary

In this survey, 55.5% of people felt that installation and adjustment were "difficult" or "time-consuming."

In particular, many people struggled with "securing with seatbelt," and over 60% of respondents found loading and unloading in a narrow car interior to be difficult.

Furthermore, 54.9% felt that information and support for confirming installation methods were insufficient, and many requests were made for easier-to-use features, starting with a "mechanism for easy attachment/detachment."

Child car seats are essential items for protecting a child's life.

Therefore, not only safety but also ease of installation and adjustment, and ease of loading and unloading, are important points for daily, stress-free use.

For those choosing a child car seat from now on, why not consider "whether it is easy for me to handle" from their perspective, in addition to safety performance?
