Is fortune-telling just about "whether it's accurate or not"?
There are various types of fortune-telling in the world, such as tarot, astrology, four pillars of destiny, and palmistry.
When fortune-telling is discussed, the point that often draws attention first is "whether it is accurate."
However, looking at the voices of those who have actually used it, we can see that what people seek from fortune-telling is not necessarily just the accuracy of the results.
So, how do people perceive the results of fortune-telling?
Therefore, this time, in collaboration with the phone fortune-telling service 'Madea,' we conducted a survey targeting 500 men and women nationwide on "Experience of Using Fortune-Telling and Its Penetration into Daily Life."

Question 5: Why do you think you felt relieved or became more positive?
Question 6: Do you want to continue using fortune-telling in the future?
Question 7: Please tell us the reason.
*In principle, values are rounded to the second decimal place, so the total may not be 100%.*
31.6% responded that they have used fortune-telling.
First, we asked if they had ever used fortune-telling.
As a result, 9.2% answered "I have used it many times," 14.8% answered "I have used it a few times," and 7.6% answered "I have used it only once."
Combined, 31.6% have experienced fortune-telling in some form.
On the other hand, 68.4% answered "I have never used it."
It seems that not only regular users but also people who try fortune-telling when something catches their interest are common.
We also asked about the reasons for starting to use fortune-telling, and here are some examples:
What was the reason you started using fortune-telling?
- A friend invited me. (20s, Male)
- Getting back together with someone I like. (30s, Female)
- I want to improve my luck. (30s, Male)
- When I became curious about my current fortune. (30s, Female)
- When I had something I was unsure about. (30s, Male)
- It started because I had something to worry about. (40s, Female)
Various reasons were given, ranging from casual triggers like "A friend invited me" to situations where people want to sort out their thoughts in life, such as "Getting back together with someone I like" or "When I had something I was unsure about."
In addition to people using it with positive intentions like "I want to improve my luck," there are also those who incorporate fortune-telling as a trigger to adjust their feelings when facing worries or anxieties.
While the timing and purpose of using fortune-telling vary from person to person, it is evident that it is cherished by many as a way to create time for self-reflection.
54.2% responded that the most frequent timing for using fortune-telling is "when I'm just curious."
Next, we asked those who had used fortune-telling multiple times about the timing when they most often use it.
The most common answer was "when I'm just curious," at 54.2%.
This was followed by "when I have worries or uncertainties" at 45.0%, and "when I want a change of pace or to refresh myself" at 24.2%.
It appears that the timing of using fortune-telling is not limited to special events.
It suggests that many people incorporate it according to their own state, such as when something casually catches their attention in daily life or when they want to shift their mood.
While it can be enjoyed casually, it can also serve as a trigger to sort out thoughts when facing uncertainties or anxieties, indicating that people interact with fortune-telling in their own unique ways.
46.2% responded that they experienced "feeling relieved or becoming more positive" by using fortune-telling.
Next, we asked those who had used fortune-telling if they had ever experienced feeling relieved or becoming more positive by using it, regardless of whether they believed the results or not.
As a result, 9.5% answered "many times" and 36.7% answered "a few times," totaling 46.2% who have experienced their hearts becoming lighter through fortune-telling.
On the other hand, 36.1% answered "not much," and 17.7% answered "not at all."
We also asked for the reasons why they felt relieved or became more positive, and here are some examples:
- Because I felt like I saw the path I should take. (20s, Female)
- Because I can approach the day positively with good fortune. (30s, Female)
- Because I felt affirmed. (30s, Male)
- Because I felt like it gave me a push. (40s, Female)
- Because when I listen to other people's thoughts and opinions, I learn things I wouldn't notice myself. (30s, Male)
- When they gave me a message of support without judgment. (40s, Female)
Reasons included comments like "Because I felt like I saw the path I should take" and "Because I felt like it gave me a push."
Furthermore, responses such as "Because I felt affirmed" and "When they gave me a message of support without judgment" suggest that it is not just the fortune-telling results themselves, but also encountering positive words and ways of thinking that lead to changes in feelings for some people.
Fortune-telling does not necessarily dictate an answer; rather, it seems to be used as a trigger to organize one's own thoughts and feelings and move forward positively.
51.2% responded that they want to continue using fortune-telling in the future.
Finally, we asked those who had used fortune-telling if they wanted to continue using it in the future.
As a result, 8.2% answered "very much" and 43.0% answered "somewhat," totaling 51.2% who showed a positive attitude.
On the other hand, 32.3% answered "not much," and 16.5% answered "not at all."
We also asked for the reasons, and here are some examples.
Respondents who answered "want to"
- Because it's good for a change of pace. (20s, Female)
- Because I like fortune-telling. (30s, Male)
- I would use it if the price was cheap. (20s, Female)
- It's fun, simply put. (20s, Male)
- When I have doubts about starting something, I think fortune-telling is one option. (30s, Female)
- Because I sometimes want to use it as a reference when I have doubts. (30s, Female)
Respondents who answered "do not want to"
- Because it's not accurate. (20s, Female)
- Because I don't really feel the need for it right now. (40s, Male)
- I don't believe in it. (20s, Male)
- It seems to be more of an issue with my own feelings. (30s, Female)
Among those who answered "want to," comments such as "Because it's good for a change of pace" and "It's fun, simply put" were given, citing its casual enjoyment.
Additionally, opinions like "When I have doubts about starting something, I think fortune-telling is one option" and "Because I sometimes want to use it as a reference when I have doubts" show that some people view fortune-telling as a hint for decision-making or a means to organize their thoughts.
On the other hand, among those who answered "do not want to," there were comments such as "Because it's not accurate" and "I don't believe in it," indicating that people's approaches to fortune-telling differ.
Perhaps one way to effectively use fortune-telling is to enjoy it or use it as a reference at a distance that suits you, rather than accepting the results at face value.
Summary
In this survey, 46.2% of those who have used fortune-telling experienced "feeling relieved or becoming more positive," and 51.2% responded that they "want to continue using it in the future."
It seems that many people find value in fortune-telling not just for its accuracy, but also as a trigger to be encouraged or to organize their thoughts.
Fortune-telling, which is incorporated not only when facing serious problems but also when simply curious or wanting a change of pace, may be becoming a familiar presence that accompanies daily life.
When you feel doubts or anxieties, why not try incorporating fortune-telling as one trigger to create time for self-reflection?
