Overview
'The Empire Competing for Morality: Where Did Minority Rights Come From?' authored by Kentaro Maeda, has been released as the latest title in the 'NHK Books' series by NHK Publishing.
Content
This book explores the origins of 'Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI),' which is a central theme in modern society. Contrary to the established theory that rights were expanded primarily through enlightenment thought or social movements, the author proposes a new perspective: the challenges posed by Imperial Japan approximately 100 years ago.
Using 'decolonization' as a key term, the book reveals how the rights of Black people, women, and foreigners in the United States and Japan were expanded through the pursuit of national interests by empires. Starting from Japan's victory in the Russo-Japanese War, the author analyzes historical turning points from the perspective of political science.
