The National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), led by President Yoshito Oshima, and Chugin Financial Group, led by President Sadanori Kato, have signed a comprehensive partnership agreement. The collaboration aims to contribute to regional sustainable development (the construction of a 'Regional Circular and Ecological Sphere') by leveraging the strengths of both organizations to conduct research on the sustainable use of environmental (natural) capital.
This marks the first comprehensive partnership NIES has established with a financial institution.
Sustainability as a Key to Regional and Business Growth
Under this agreement, NIES and Chugin FG will promote research and societal implementation related to environmental capital, which forms the basis of the environment, economy, and society. By conducting long-term, continuous activities, they aim to further promote regional development.
Contents of the Comprehensive Partnership Agreement
(1) Purpose To promote mutual cooperation and activities, matching regional needs with cutting-edge research, thereby contributing to regional sustainable development.
(2) Areas of Cooperation 1. Research, study, and societal implementation of climate change adaptation and mitigation measures. 2. Research, study, and societal implementation of nature coexistence and biodiversity. 3. Utilization of environmental capital and regional awareness-raising to solve environmental problems.
(3) Effective Period Three years from May 26, 2026, to May 25, 2029 (extendable upon written mutual agreement).
Future Initiatives (Examples) - Support for TCFD compliance and spreading awareness of adaptation measures among regional businesses (e.g., holding seminars). - Research on the climate change adaptation effects of wooden architecture. - Research and practical implementation of mitigation technologies in industrial zones. - Consideration of TNFD compliance and the practice of Nature Positive/NbS (Nature-based Solutions).
