Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun, Ltd. (President: Taku Kamisaka; Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo) is releasing the book 'Today's Knowledge Series: Thoroughly Easy Guide to Forging, New Edition' (authored by Kitaro Shinozaki). Forging is a processing technology that creates components by striking solid metal using tools and dies. It began with hot forging, where materials are heated to soften them for better formability. Later, as cold forging technology—which allows processing at room temperature—was developed, this method spread throughout Japan starting around 1960, particularly within the automotive industry. Cold forging technology is said to have contributed to elevating Japan's status as an industrial nation.

* Crushing and strengthening allows for thin-walled and hollow structures!

Forging is classified as a type of plastic working technology. Its advantages include high production efficiency and the ability to achieve high strength and high toughness. This is because the crystal structure of the metal is crushed and elongated during the forging process, creating a 'metal flow line' that follows the shape of the product. This enables the creation of thin-walled and hollow structures, which reduces material costs, and also allows for parts that were previously separate to be formed in a single shot.

While processing precision was previously considered to be between casting and machining, in recent years, it has achieved such high precision that post-processing is often unnecessary. As a result, it has become possible to mass-produce small, lightweight, high-quality, and complex integrated parts, contributing to a reduction in processing costs.

* Easy-to-understand illustrated explanations of high-quality processing mechanisms!

This book clearly explains the mechanisms of forging aimed at achieving higher added value and improved productivity. It introduces the current status and future direction of the three elements of forming—materials, dies (tools), and machinery—in a friendly and easy-to-understand manner using illustrations.

The book also provides a simple explanation of the differences and functions compared to press and sheet metal processing, which also utilize plastic deformation. It explains the basis for achieving high-quality processing, supported by evidence and data. The author, who led research at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) for many years, conveys the charm and brilliance of 'forging' in this content, which has been updated for the first time in 13 years.
