The Tokyo Metropolitan Government, with NPO ETIC. serving as the secretariat, has announced that 'TOKYO STARTUP GATEWAY 2026' (TSG 2026) began accepting entries on May 19.

Now in its 13th year, this contest is open to individuals aged 15 to 39 who aspire to become entrepreneurs. It features a low entry barrier, allowing participation with an idea of just 400 Japanese characters. Last year, the event saw a record 4,418 entries, and with a cumulative total of over 20,000 applicants, it stands as one of the largest contests of its kind in Japan.

The entry period runs from May 19 to July 14. This is followed by a four-month 'brush-up' period where participants refine their business plans before the final selection. The Grand Prize winner will receive 3 million yen, and the Excellence Prize winner will receive 1.5 million yen. Additionally, those who establish a corporation in Tokyo may receive 1 million yen in activity funds (subject to screening). Participants also gain access to practical startup support from mentors and supporters through ETIC.

A new 'U18 Award Category' has been introduced this year specifically for applicants in the under-18 generation. This category aims to recognize innovative business plans that challenge conventional norms and encourage younger generations to take on new challenges.

This initiative is part of Tokyo's startup strategy, 'Global Innovation Strategy 2.0', which aims to increase the city's startup rate to 12% by 2030. TSG 2026 seeks to produce young entrepreneurs who can change the world from Tokyo.
