Four companies from the NTT Group (NTT East Corporation, NTT Communications Corporation [NTT DOCOMO Business], NTT DOCOMO Solutions Corporation, and NTT DATA Group Corporation; hereinafter 'NTT Group'), along with 1Finity Corporation of the Fujitsu Group (hereinafter '1Finity'), and Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation of the Mitsubishi Chemical Group (hereinafter 'Mitsubishi Chemical'), are working to reduce the burden on workers inspecting outdoor plant facilities by realizing smart maintenance through the utilization of IOWN® APN (Note 1) and AI. Regarding outdoor plant facilities, the implementation of smart maintenance has been slow to progress due to constraints in the communication environment combined with a scarcity of successful use cases. This created a situation where 'improvement of the communication environment' and 'utilization of smart maintenance' were mutually struggling to advance.
To solve these challenges, in February 2026, we conducted a verification of the construction of a high-capacity, low-latency communication environment utilizing IOWN® APN and 60GHz band wireless LAN (WiGig, Note 2) at the Mizushima Industrial Complex in Okayama Prefecture. As a result of the verification, we confirmed that by building a high-capacity, low-latency communication environment outdoors, it is possible to realize smart maintenance that utilizes external computing resources.
Going forward, based on the communication environment verified this time, we will expand use cases for smart maintenance, such as anomaly detection technology using video and audio data from multiple robots and devices, and promote the reduction of workload for on-site workers in actual industrial environments.
