Theatrical Anime 'Look Back' Exhibition: Kiyotaka Oshiyama's Emotions in Lines – Traveling Exhibition to be Held at Shinsaibashi PARCO!

The "Theatrical Anime Look Back Exhibition" Executive Committee (Azabudai Hills Gallery, Studio Durian, Avex Pictures) is pleased to announce that, following its run at Azabudai Hills Gallery, the "Theatrical Anime Look Back Exhibition: Kiyotaka Oshiyama's Emotions in Lines" will be held at Shinsaibashi PARCO starting Friday, April 24.

Despite its short 58-minute runtime, the theatrical anime "Look Back" became a major topic of conversation both in Japan and abroad, grossing over 4.4 billion yen.

This exhibition focuses on how director Kiyotaka Oshiyama and the creators involved in the project wove together the world of the original manga, unraveling the trajectory and dedication involved in elevating the manga into an animated work.

Visitors can enjoy an exhibition area created with the special cooperation of original author Tatsuki Fujimoto, as well as photo spots that recreate famous scenes from the film.

Kiyotaka Oshiyama Profile Born in Fukushima Prefecture in 1982. Began his career as an animator in 2004. Served as animation director for "Dennou Coil" in 2006.

Since then, he has worked as a director, screenwriter, and designer on numerous projects, engaging in diverse forms of expression. In 2017, he established the animation production company Studio Durian and produced the short film "SHISHIGARI." In 2024, he released the theatrical anime "Look Back," for which he served as director, screenwriter, character designer, animation director, and key animator. He is the author of "Drawing Masterclass: Oshiyama-style Drawing Techniques, Expanded Edition (God-tier Drawing Series)."

The film "Look Back" was a question posed to the irresistible changes of the era, and a survival strategy. Now that AI can generate images and everything else, why do people still refuse to stop drawing? This is a work that attempted to answer that question with my own lines.

In this film, I was fortunate to be able to borrow Tatsuki Fujimoto's original work and explore expressions unique to animation regarding "the act of drawing."

I do not intend to deny technology. While acknowledging its power, I believe that the essence of a work—and the reason it is worth leaving behind—lies in the human impulse and clumsiness of choosing to draw regardless. "Look Back" is my own personal tribute to creators and a tribute to humanity.

This exhibition is not a record of the completed film, but an attempt to visualize the things drawn, the things left undrawn, and the traces of emotions and thoughts that spilled out during the process, especially in this day and age.

Anime and manga are supported by the collective intelligence accumulated through the relentless exploration of our predecessors. This work is also part of that flow, and we continue to draw lines with various emotions, taking our time and making mistakes.

To draw is an accumulation of thought and an expression of the body itself. Everything about the "person who drew" resides in those lines. I hope this exhibition will be an opportunity to once again ask, "What does it mean for a person to draw?"
