The Pola Museum of Art (Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture) will hold the "Cézanne Legend" exhibition from Wednesday, June 17, to Wednesday, April 7, 2027. This exhibition commemorates the 120th anniversary of the death of painter Paul Cézanne, often called the "Father of Modern Painting." It will showcase selected Cézanne works from the Pola Museum's collection and delve into the charm of his art, which revolutionized 20th-century painting.

Paul Cézanne, "Sugar Bowl, Pears, and Tablecloth," 1893-1894, Pola Museum of Art

Born in Aix-en-Provence in the South of France, Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) received art education in his hometown before moving to Paris. There, he encountered the latest artistic trends, the essence of modernity, and forged his path toward original expression. Although he participated in the Impressionist exhibitions twice, he maintained a distance from the Impressionists' aesthetic of capturing fleeting moments. Cézanne moved his base of operations back to his native Provence region to hone his skills. His ultimate goal was to express art as "a harmony parallel to nature."

This exhibition will feature six oil paintings by Cézanne, including still lifes, landscapes, and portraits, from the Pola Museum's collection. It will also introduce works by artists such as Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, and Henri Matisse, who revered Cézanne, were influenced by him, and carried on his legacy.

"You will understand, Cézanne is like a god of painting."

-- Henri Matisse, 1925
