The Shimane Art Museum is hosting "Ceramics of Kawai Kanjiro" in the Collection Exhibition Room 3.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the passing of Kawai Kanjiro, a potter from Yasugi City. Kawai is known for launching the Mingei (folk art) movement alongside Yanagi Soetsu and others, and his presence helped the movement spread in Shimane ahead of the rest of Japan. While Kawai is strongly associated with the Mingei movement, he never confined himself to its framework, continuously evolving his style and leaving behind works that differ significantly depending on the era. Tracing his long evolution reveals that his work was supported by skillful use of glazes and rich modeling expressions.
This exhibition divides his lifelong ceramic work into three periods, introducing them while focusing on the glaze usage and forms that differ by era.
*Note on the kanji character for Kawai Kanjiro's "Kan": The final stroke correctly includes a "ヽ".
