The number of stores registered with 'Toriniko', an app designed to reduce food loss through in-store pickups and expanding mainly in the Shonan region (operated by Quagga LLC), has surpassed 50. Approximately one year since its launch in March 2025, we have been driven by the desire to make the Shonan region a place where people naturally engage in food loss reduction. Through Toriniko, a cycle of connection is gradually expanding between local shops and residents.

50 Restaurants in the Shonan Region Now Using the Service

In about a year since its service launch in March 2025, the number of stores using Toriniko has increased to over 50. Food items that are not sold out at restaurant counters are either consumed by the staff or discarded if they cannot be sold to customers. We have continued our activities with the hope of helping these carefully prepared products find their way to someone's hands, and over 50 stores have joined us in this endeavor.

What are your thoughts from your sales experience?

Many people feel regret about products they've made going unsold or being discarded. Furthermore, most people keenly feel that food loss is a truly significant issue and an important challenge, regardless of whether their own store has surplus items.

Bakeries, cake shops, traditional Japanese confectioneries, and delicatessens all create their products with pride, wanting people to eat them. However, sales don't always meet expectations due to factors like weather or fluctuations in customer traffic.

However, tackling food loss can be difficult for small businesses. Toriniko offers a solution where it's beneficial for the store, the user, and the environment – a 'three-way win'. Some express that this is a more meaningful initiative than simply offering discounts.

Regarding your interactions with local people, have you noticed anything about the characteristics of the Shonan region?

First and foremost, people in Shonan love Shonan. More specifically, those living in Kamakura love Kamakura, and those in Zushi love Zushi. Even within Shonan, people love their own specific area the most.

The region is also attractive for its many small, independent shops. Many individuals open businesses that leverage their unique skills and operate on a small scale, cherishing their desire to create. These small-scale operators often gather for small-scale markets.

What I've noticed from visiting shops in the Shonan region is the close relationship between shopkeepers and customers. People enter the shops like they would a friend's house, saying 'Hello!', chatting, and then buying what they want to eat. They also stop by even if they don't buy anything. The Shonan area gives a very strong impression of such casual interactions.

Last year, we received the Kamakura Circular Award. The Mayor of Kamakura, with whom I spoke at the time, was also very friendly, and there was no barrier between the attendees and the award recipients. I experienced the unique 'sense of unity' characteristic of this region.

What are your future prospects?

The Shonan region has a strong desire to protect the environment and is undertaking various initiatives for a circular society. I believe it is a leading region in Japan in this field.

Therefore, we want to expand from Shonan, reducing food loss with Toriniko and creating a better society where food circulates properly within the community.

We aim to solve the problems leading to waste for more businesses and to convey the charm of the region.

We want to create an app where people living in Shonan can naturally order through 'Toriniko', feel good about reducing food loss, and return home happily to enjoy their delicious purchases.
