Image of MR Welding Training Introduction Using DPVR E4
DPVR, a provider of XR solutions, is pleased to announce that its PCVR headset, the "DPVR E4," has been adopted as the display and visualization device for Fronius' "Welducation Simulator," an MR welding education system developed by the Austrian welding technology manufacturer Fronius.
In the manufacturing industry, challenges include a shortage of skilled workers, difficulties in skill transfer, increasing education costs, and addressing safety risks. Welding training utilizing MR is gaining attention as a new industrial education method that allows for repetitive practice by combining virtual guidance and evaluation data while maintaining the sense of working in a real space.
MR Training Fusing Real Space and Virtual Guidance
The Welducation Simulator combines the DPVR E4, a camera system, and infrared tracking technology to create an MR training environment that overlays virtual welding objects and guidance onto the real space. Trainees can learn in a flow similar to actual work, including checking work procedures, setting welding conditions, and confirming torch position and angle.
Supported welding processes include MIG/MAG welding, TIG welding, and MMA (shielded metal arc welding). It also supports practical work postures, including butt welding and fillet welding.
Step-by-Step Learning and Real-Time Evaluation
This system displays real-time information such as a moving guide indicating the ideal welding speed, a highlighted area showing the appropriate distance, and a ring guide indicating the optimal angle. Learners can choose from three difficulty modes: Easy, Medium, and Hard, allowing them to gradually improve their skills from basic learning to practical and test levels.
After training, an evaluation report is automatically generated, including torch control, speed, angle, distance, warnings, and critical errors. Torch trajectories and important movements are also visualized, making it easier for instructors to understand trainees' challenges and utilize the feedback for skill assessment and educational purposes.
Simultaneous Support for Safety, Cost Reduction, and Educational Efficiency
MR welding training allows for practice without the use of welding materials, shielding gas, consumables, or waste materials. By increasing opportunities for repetitive practice while suppressing the risks of burns and fires, effectiveness is expected in terms of safety, cost reduction, and reduced environmental impact.
Case studies indicate an approximately 16.3% improvement in learning efficiency, an approximately 65% increase in effective welding practice time, and approximately a threefold increase in practice repetitions per unit of time compared to conventional methods.
Reasons Why DPVR E4 is Suitable for Industrial Training
- As a PC-connected VR headset, it supports industrial simulations and high-load content. - High-resolution display of 3664x1920 allows for easy viewing of work guides and detailed information. - 6DoF tracking enables reflection of postures and movements close to actual work. - Supports a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, providing a smooth MR/VR experience. - Lightweight design and comfortable fit support continuous use in educational and training settings.
Expansion of Industrial Education with XR
DPVR provides XR devices and solutions for a wide range of fields, including education, healthcare, industrial training, remote support, and entertainment. This case demonstrates that XR technology is not limited to entertainment applications but is also practical in the fields of industrial workforce development and skill transfer.
DPVR will continue to promote the widespread adoption of XR training environments that are easy to implement in the field, in collaboration with industrial education partners and content providers.
