March 25, 2026, marks one year since the passing of film director Masahiro Shinoda. The "Film Director Masahiro Shinoda Retrospective Project," which began on the anniversary of his death, continues to disseminate the appeal of Shinoda's works, which are gaining renewed appreciation both in Japan and abroad, to connect them to the future. Masahiro Shinoda, a film director who, as a standard-bearer of the Shochiku New Wave, continuously questioned the times and depicted Japanese culture from his unique perspective. This project, which re-examines his body of work, will be a valuable opportunity not only for film fans but also for a wide range of people who love culture and art.

Screening Project Kicks Off at Bunkamura Le Cinéma Shibuya Miyashita! Event with Shima Iwashita Confirmed!

The main screening project will sequentially hold special screenings selected from various perspectives at deeply connected theaters, along with talk events discussing director Masahiro Shinoda or his works. The Bunkamura Le Cinéma Shibuya Miyashita chapter, which marks the opening, will screen a total of six films, including early masterpieces and representative works after the establishment of "Hyogensha." To commemorate this special screening, a talk event featuring actress Shima Iwashita, Shinoda's wife and star of numerous masterpieces, has been confirmed! We will hear valuable stories unique to Ms. Iwashita, who co-founded the independent production company "Hyogensha" and continued to lead the forefront of filmmaking.

Furthermore, the "main visual" and "trailer" symbolizing this special screening have been simultaneously released!

The main visual for the Le Cinéma Shibuya Miyashita chapter uses a scene from "Akane-gumo" that eloquently tells a story of tension and sorrow. The trailer is a video that evokes memories of the numerous masterpieces Shinoda created.

We are pleased to announce that a special screening has been newly decided in New York. Already in the United States, a special feature at the Harvard University Film Archive (from 3/27) and a screening of "Yashagaike" at the Taipei Golden Horse Fantastic Film Festival (from 4/10) have been held, attracting many visitors daily and receiving enthusiastic reviews. The enthusiasm for re-evaluating Shinoda's works is growing across the ocean!
