Opening Friday, June 12: Pushkin's Immortal Masterpiece of Tragic Love Set to Tchaikovsky's Melodies! Trailer and Scene Photos for "Eugene Onegin" Unveiled!

The "MET Live Viewing" program allows audiences in Japan to enjoy the latest stage performances from the world's premier Metropolitan Opera (MET) in New York at local cinemas.

From the currently running "MET Live Viewing 2025-26 Season," Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin," a masterpiece by the great Russian literary figure Pushkin, will be screened at movie theaters nationwide from Friday, June 12 to Thursday, June 18. (The Togeki theater will have an extended three-week run until Thursday, July 2.)

When he finally realizes the value of the love he once coldly rejected, she is already the unreachable wife of another man. Onegin, whose youthful arrogance led him to push away true love, and Tatyana, who built a noble life by moving on from him. What conclusion awaits the two when they reunite after several years?

Tchaikovsky's operatic masterpiece portrays the irrecoverable pain of love, resonating with audiences across generations.

Asmik Grigorian, one of today's leading sopranos known for her captivating voice and acting skills that enthrall opera fans worldwide, delivers a passionate performance as the heroine Tatyana.

Opposite her as Onegin is the highly anticipated baritone Iurii Samoilov, who has performed at major international opera houses and festivals and is making his MET Live Viewing debut with this production. In addition to a cast of elite singers in supporting roles, the production is enhanced by the refined direction of Olivier Award-winning master director Deborah Warner.

Synopsis Set in 1820s Russia (updated to the late 19th century in this production). Lensky, the fiancé of Olga, arrives with his friend Eugene Onegin at the estate of a female landowner who has two daughters, Tatyana and Olga. The older sister, Tatyana, falls in love at first sight and writes a letter expressing her feelings, but Onegin gives a cold reply, stating he is not the marrying kind. Months later, at a ball celebrating Tatyana's name day, an irritated Onegin, who was dragged to what he considers a boring event, repeatedly dances with Olga out of spite. This provokes Lensky to challenge him to a duel, which ends with Onegin shooting him dead. Years later, Onegin returns from his wanderings and reunites with Tatyana, who is now a duchess.
