Shosukabu.com (Headquartered in Nerima Ward, Tokyo; Chairman: Yutaka Yamanaka) is hosting a reading group to discuss 'Escape from Model Land: How Mathematical Models Can Lead Us Astray and What We Can Do About It' by Erica Thompson. This event is co-organized with the Nerima Political Research Group and the Civil Division 8 Monitoring Committee. The book explores the premise that while mathematical models are essential for understanding a complex world, they cannot perfectly mirror reality. A key feature of this book is its treatment of mathematical models not just as technical tools, but as social and political activities permeated by culture, values, biases, and institutional designs. It examines essential issues and dangers of models through examples such as pandemics, financial risk management, and climate change prediction. The reading group will discuss topics including why models deviate from reality, how to think about prediction and uncertainty, and the inherent biases within models. The session aims to provide a useful space for dialogue for those interested in scientific prediction, policy-making, financial risk, and AI. The event is scheduled for late June 2026 via Zoom and is free of charge. To register, please email [email protected]. Lecturer Yutaka Yamanaka is a globally recognized activist investor who holds degrees from the University of Tokyo, Columbia University, and the LSE, and is actively involved in social and political organizations.
