Strong Typhoon Bavi (BAVI) is approaching Taiwan, and the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) issued a high wave warning for the eastern coast this evening (9th). A land typhoon warning is expected to be announced early tomorrow morning (10th). CWB technical specialist Hsieh Pei-yun stated during tonight’s briefing that Typhoon Bavi has a broad circulation, with a 380-kilometer radius of 7-level gale-force winds and a 180-kilometer radius of 10-level gale-force winds. The typhoon is forecast to continue moving northwestward, gradually approaching the waters east of Taiwan.
According to Hsieh, outer cloud bands of the typhoon brought scattered light rain to northern, northeastern, and southern areas tonight. Starting tomorrow daytime, intermittent rainfall will develop in northern Taiwan and Yilan, with occasional sunshine during breaks in the rain. However, rainfall frequency will increase significantly by evening. Southern regions may see noticeable rain from tomorrow afternoon onward. During daytime tomorrow, the typhoon’s outer circulation will increasingly affect the island. Temperatures will remain high during dry spells, with highs reaching 36°C in Yunlin and areas southward, as well as in the Hualien-Taitung region. Particularly, the Hualien-Taitung valley and Kinmen may experience foehn winds.
From tomorrow night through Saturday (11th), rainfall is expected across all regions of Taiwan. The most significant precipitation will occur in mountainous areas of northern, central, and northeastern Taiwan, potentially reaching torrential or even heavier levels. According to the CWB’s latest rainfall forecast, cumulative rainfall from today through the 12th is expected to reach 600–900 mm in northern mountainous areas, 400–600 mm in Yilan’s mountainous zones, and 500–800 mm in central regions such as Taichung and Nantou. Although southern Taiwan is farther from the typhoon, mountainous areas may still accumulate 400–600 mm due to the broad circulation.
