Lin Cho-shui Exposes Taiwan's Greatest Humiliation: National Security Survival Depends on AIT Approval

The Taiwan Affairs Office of China recently criticized Raymond Greene, Director of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), accusing him of violating former U.S. President Trump’s statements and acting as a 'supreme ruler' undermining peace in the Taiwan Strait. Former legislator Lin Cho-shui pointed out that amid multiple crises, Taiwan now depends on a foreign representative office to pass budgets critical to national survival, yet political parties across the spectrum feel no shame—only mutual anger.

Why was Greene labeled a 'supreme ruler'? Lin explained that China's Taiwan Affairs Office lashed out at Greene for pressuring Taiwan's Legislative Yuan to approve the 'Special Defense Budget,' treating him as an overlord. Lin argued that without AIT's involvement, Taiwan’s special defense budget would have stalled at the KMT’s proposed NT$380 billion plus, never reaching the NT$780 billion level or including additional drone funding.

Lin lamented four 'inconceivable crises' facing Taiwan: First, the KMT, backed by Beijing’s support, has become arrogantly dominant. Second, KMT legislators are astonishingly weak and submissive toward Beijing but aggressively defiant toward the ruling party and public opinion. Third, Taiwan’s absurd constitutional system prevents majority public opinion from guiding national policy. Fourth, the ruling party’s political maneuvering ability is completely inadequate.

Lin emphasized that relying on a foreign institution to pass a budget essential for national survival is both an unbelievable crisis and an unbelievable humiliation. He lamented, 'Tragically, Taiwan cannot ensure its national security without enduring this shame. Yet the political establishment feels no shame—only anger toward each other.'
