Samuel Yin, founder of United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC), attended a press conference supporting media personality Akira Yatabe on the 9th and shared the stage with Shen Po-yang, the DPP's candidate for Taipei mayor. This marked the first public appearance together since the large-scale recall movement and Shen's official campaign launch.

In his speech, Yin clearly expressed strong support for Shen Po-yang, linking the Taipei mayoral election to civil defense and national security issues. He emphasized that the Taipei mayor should serve as the city's civil defense commander.

Yin revealed that in November last year, he posted on Facebook urging DPP Chair Lai Ching-te to immediately nominate Shen Po-yang as the mayoral candidate. However, the DPP did not finalize its decision until six months later.

When asked why he had rarely campaigned for Shen in the past, Yin explained that if he were to support Shen, he would inevitably discuss the issues of unification versus independence and national survival, stating, "Without a nation, no matter how good the municipal governance is, it means nothing." However, he noted that the DPP believed the mayoral race should focus on local governance and avoid touching on cross-strait political issues. "So I decided not to speak," he said.

Nonetheless, Yin emphasized that the recent incident involving Akira Yatabe involves civil defense. He pointed out that even if the Chinese People's Liberation Army has not yet launched a direct military attack, China's infiltration, coercive tactics, and other forms of pressure remain serious security challenges that Taiwanese society must confront.

Yin further urged Taipei citizens to consider who can truly protect their freedom and safety amid China's gradual infiltration and violent threats. He praised Shen Po-yang for his long-standing advocacy of civil defense and for founding the Black Bear Academy, which aims to strengthen Taiwan's societal self-defense capabilities.

Yin also criticized Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an for failing to clearly answer a councilor's question about which country seeks to eliminate Taiwan. He stressed that safeguarding national freedom requires not only the military but also robust civil defense. One key reason he supports Shen, Yin said, is that Shen is "the protector of the capital city."

Yin bluntly stated that supporting Chiang Wan-an is "equivalent to leaving Taipei's gates wide open" and called on Taipei citizens to support Shen Po-yang.
