Germany's wealth has primarily been created by the 'Mittelstand.' This term literally means 'middle class' and has long been regarded as the core strength of Europe's largest economy. However, it is now facing a critical turning point. A report released in May by EY, one of the Big Four accounting firms, shows that Germany's industrial sector is losing over 10,000 jobs per month. Between February 2022 and early 2026, Germany's industrial output declined by approximately 10%, with energy-intensive industries seeing reductions exceeding 15%. The main reason is the intense price pressure brought by emerging Chinese competitors in international markets. This has placed immense pressure on numerous century-old German factories. Notably, for the first time in decades, Germany is importing more advanced capital goods from China than it is exporting to China—a significant reversal that underscores the mounting challenges facing German industry.
