On the 18th, Kaohsiung City's Environmental Protection Bureau received public reports of dead fish floating in the Houjing River's Xingzhong Bridge section in Nanzi District and the Youchang Drainage Channel. Inspection personnel immediately rushed to the site for monitoring. Water quality tests showed a pH of 7.65, conductivity of 545 μS/cm, temperature of 28.3°C, and dissolved oxygen (DO) of 1.78 mg/L. On the morning of the 19th, retesting showed a pH of 7.64, conductivity of 629 μS/cm, temperature of 30.3°C, and DO of 3.02 mg/L. While dissolved oxygen levels have slightly increased, they remain critically low. Other parameters and water color appear normal, and no abnormal discharges were observed during on-site inspections. The bureau concluded that the high temperatures likely caused insufficient dissolved oxygen, leading to fish deaths.
To swiftly remove dead fish from the river surface, the Environmental Bureau immediately notified the Water Resources Bureau to dispatch personnel for cleanup operations. Water quality will continue to be monitored on the 20th, with enhanced river patrols and intensified inspections of potential pollution sources in the surrounding area.
To safeguard the water quality of the Houjing River, the Environmental Bureau will continue conducting inspections of nearby businesses. The public is urged to report any illegal discharges or pollution incidents in the river by calling the environmental complaint hotline (07-7317600) or the city's 1999 citizen hotline, helping ensure polluters cannot evade detection and enabling collective protection of the Houjing River's ecosystem.
