Educator Chen Yu-Hui's new book 'Idioms Are Not Just Four Characters' was launched today (19th) at the Hsinchu County Cultural Center Concert Hall. The event featured a student art exhibition, storytelling with vintage photos, a book sharing session, and a mass parent-child reading activity, attracting nearly 300 parents and children.

Chen Yu-Hui stated that idioms are more than just language knowledge taught in classrooms—each idiom carries a story, reflecting historical contexts, life choices, and emotional experiences from different eras. She hopes children will not only memorize definitions but also develop empathy, gratitude, courage, and responsibility through these stories.

Chen emphasized that the value of parent-child reading lies not in reading speed or volume, but in parents dedicating time to accompany their children and listen to their thoughts. When idioms connect with real-life experiences, the words truly resonate in children's hearts.

The launch event received support from local political, educational, cultural, corporate, and community leaders. Attendees included Hsinchu County Magistrate's spouse Gan Xiumei, Legislator Hsu Hsin-ying, Hsinchu County Councilor Wu Hsu-chih, Cultural Bureau Director Chu Shu-min, former President of Taipei University of Education Chuang Chi-ming, National Concert Hall Professor Fang Ming-chien, vocalist Chen Ming-keng, and Wind Media Group partner Chen Yu-chia.

The mass parent-child reading session was a highlight. Parents accompanied their children in turning pages and reading aloud together, sharing their works and reading reflections. Applause frequently echoed through the concert hall, and many parents used their smartphones to capture their children's reading and learning moments.

Legislator Hsu Hsin-ying praised Chen for compiling years of educational experience into a practical guide that brings idiom learning closer to daily life. She emphasized that reading is foundational for developing children's comprehension, critical thinking, and expression skills, and that joint efforts by families and schools can boost children's learning confidence.

Councilor Wu Hsu-chih noted that parent-child reading enhances not only language skills but also family interaction. Through the idioms' stories, parents can discuss life choices and values with their children, integrating reading into family education.

Magistrate's spouse Gan Xiumei and Director Chu Shu-min extended their blessings to the author and participating families, expressing hope that more civic forces will join reading promotion efforts, allowing culture and education to continue taking root locally.

The event also showcased student-created works in a 'Little Authors Exhibition' and featured a retrospective on Chen Yu-Hui's journey in education and parent-child companionship through vintage photos. Organizers said they aimed to show how reading connects family memories and to help children understand that learning happens not only in classrooms but also through life experiences.

Sponsored by Mr.WISH Hope Tea and Shun Cheng Cake, the event provided drinks and snacks, allowing families to enjoy quality reading time together. Chen Yu-Hui expressed her hope that 'Idioms Are Not Just Four Characters' will reach more schools and homes, enabling children to understand culture through idiom stories and accumulate strength to face life's challenges through shared reading. 'Let parent-child reading begin in Hsinchu County!' she declared.
