All of Taiwan is preparing for dramatic weather changes. The Central Weather Administration (CWA) has issued its latest forecast, warning that tomorrow (July 20) will be the most significant rainfall day of the week. Under the influence of persistent southwest winds, thunderstorms are highly likely across northern and central Taiwan, Yilan-Hualien regions, and all mountainous areas in the afternoon. Northern areas and central mountainous regions must especially guard against localized short-duration heavy downpours.
The CWA also reported signs of a developing tropical disturbance east of the Philippines toward Guam. This system could evolve into a tropical depression by the 'latter half of this week,' raising high concerns about its future path.
According to reports from Central News Agency, CWA forecaster Zhang Cheng-chuan stated that Taiwan will continue to be affected by southwest winds. Windward southern areas may experience isolated brief showers or thunderstorms, with a chance of localized heavy rain. Central regions may see scattered brief showers in the early morning to late morning. Other areas will be mostly cloudy to sunny during the day, but isolated afternoon thunderstorms and localized heavy rain are expected in central-southern, northern, Yilan-Hualien, and mountainous areas.
The CWA particularly warns that northern areas and central mountainous regions face a risk of short-duration torrential rain in the afternoons. Residents are urged to carry rain gear and remain cautious when going out.
Weather Forecast: July 20–26
• Tuesday to Friday (July 21–24): Mostly cloudy to sunny across Taiwan, with attention to localized heavy rain
From Tuesday (21st) morning, southern areas should still watch for isolated brief showers or thunderstorms. Starting Tuesday, southwest winds will gradually weaken. From July 21 to 24, winds around Taiwan will shift from southwest to southerly. During this period, most areas will remain mostly cloudy to sunny, though isolated afternoon thunderstorms will occur in western Taiwan and mountainous regions. Mountainous areas should continue monitoring for localized heavy rain.
• Saturday to Sunday (July 25–26): Isolated showers in eastern Taiwan and Hengchun Peninsula
From Saturday to Sunday, wind patterns around Taiwan will shift to easterly. The weather will remain mostly cloudy to sunny nationwide, with only scattered brief showers in eastern Taiwan and the Hengchun Peninsula.
Temperature Forecast: July 20–26 – Extreme Heat Before Rainfall! Four Regions, Including Greater Taipei, May Hit 36°C
Forecaster Zhang Cheng-chuan noted that before rainfall, temperatures will remain extremely hot across Taiwan, with highs generally between 32°C and 35°C. Four regions—Greater Taipei, mountainous areas in central and southern Taiwan, and the Huatung Valley—may experience localized temperatures exceeding 36°C due to topography and wind patterns.
Will a Typhoon Form? Key Timing: 'Latter Half of This Week' – Monitor Tropical Disturbance Development
Regarding tropical systems, Zhang mentioned that meteorological data shows a tropical disturbance developing east of the Philippines toward Guam. This system may gradually evolve into a tropical depression by the 'latter half of this week.' However, due to significant discrepancies among international forecast models, the disturbance’s future track and intensity must be closely monitored.
