KMT councilor Yang Chih-tou and council candidate Ho Yuan-kai, among others, launched a hunger strike on Ketagalan Boulevard to protest the DPP's inadequate handling of the Zhonglian toxic oil scandal. Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen visited the site at noon today (20th). Lu emphasized that she will convene an online 'National Anti-Toxic Oil Conference' with county and city mayors this week, with the meeting time to be announced tomorrow or the day after. Inviting mayors across Taiwan regardless of party affiliation, she urged the central government to seriously consider and adopt local recommendations to resolve the crisis and ensure public food safety.
At noon today, Lu visited Yang Chih-tou, Ho Yuan-kai, Chang Chia-hsin, and Chen Ching-an. Attendees at the site included former KMT Vice Chairman Lien Chan-wen, Keelung Mayor Hsieh Kuo-liang, legislators Yeh Yuan-chih and Chen Ching-hui. Lu stressed that local governments are on the front lines of food safety oversight and best understand where problems, loopholes, and regulatory shortcomings lie. She called on the central government to take the conference's proposals seriously, emphasizing that solving the issue is paramount to restoring public trust and peace of mind.
Lu announced she will personally call mayors across Taiwan, including those in southern counties, to invite them to the online conference, aiming to consolidate local consensus and submit it to the central government for action. She expects the meeting to be held within the next two days.
Regarding online rumors claiming this is a 'relay hunger strike,' Yang Chih-tou clarified that no such arrangement exists. He stated they have been fasting for nearly 26 hours, with 24-hour media livestreaming, yet false information continues to spread. He criticized anonymous social media accounts for spreading disinformation, calling it troubling as 'three men make a tiger'—a tactic he accused the DPP of using to cover up governance failures with simplistic and crude lies.
