The Ocean Affairs Council's Coast Guard Administration vessel 'Hsun Hu No. 7' has successfully completed its first 2024 fisheries patrol mission in the Pacific high seas. After a 60-day voyage covering approximately 9,500 nautical miles, the vessel safely returned to Kaohsiung Port today (20th). Ocean Affairs Council Chairperson Kuan Pei-ling personally welcomed the crew at the dock, expressing heartfelt appreciation to the Coast Guard and Fisheries Administration personnel for their dedication and hard work in safeguarding national maritime rights and maintaining order in high seas fisheries.

The mission included boarding inspections of 11 Taiwanese远洋 fishing vessels. These inspections verified vessel operations, upheld high seas fisheries regulations, and conveyed government support to offshore fishermen, demonstrating the Coast Guard's dual role in both service and enforcement. The operation also advanced practical efforts to combat Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, reaffirming Taiwan's commitment to sustainable marine resources and compliance with international fisheries standards.

The Council noted that since May, gray-zone provocations in waters surrounding Taiwan have intensified. China has conducted so-called 'law enforcement' operations under the guise of authority expansion, even broadcasting inspection demands to international cargo vessels—drawing international concern and highlighting the critical role of the Coast Guard in safeguarding maritime security.

Kuan emphasized that Coast Guard personnel remain on the front lines, defending national security and public safety amid gray-zone challenges and complex enforcement duties, earning the public's trust in the government's ability to protect the nation. The government will continue improving legal frameworks, enhancing equipment and duty conditions, and increasing welfare benefits to create a better working environment and serve as the Coast Guard's strongest institutional backing.

Kuan also acknowledged the personal sacrifices made during the mission, which coincided with the Dragon Boat Festival. Despite being unable to return home for family reunions, the crew steadfastly carried out their duties under harsh sea conditions. She expressed the highest respect to all Coast Guard and Fisheries Administration staff and extended gratitude to their families for their understanding and support, which enables personnel to serve without worry.
