The results of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Central Standing Committee election have been announced. Compared to the previous party congress, when President Lai Ching-te had just taken office and non-Lai factions seized one seat through surprise maneuvers and luck, this time Lai's allies executed a tightly coordinated strategy. They secured seven seats firmly, leaving non-Lai factions with only three. This gives Lai a commanding 70% majority in shaping the party's central structure for his presidential re-election campaign, making any attempt to force him out extremely difficult.
In the previous Central Committee, Lai's planned candidate, legislator Lin Yi-chin, failed to secure a stable win due to a vote defection by Central Committee member Lu Lin Xiaofeng. She expressed dissatisfaction with the Lai administration's political and judicial handling of former Vice Premier Cheng Wen-tsan, which led to a tie between Lin and legislator Chen Ting-fei, ultimately decided by a lottery. Lin lost the draw, allowing Chen to claim the seat. This incident exposed vulnerabilities in Lai's internal party control.
However, this time, under the authority of the presidency, the Lai faction meticulously organized its support, preventing any repeat of past surprises. The power structure within the DPP is now firmly under Lai's influence, ensuring his agenda will dominate future policy and personnel decisions.
