According to British media reports, the Chinese government is considering tightening export controls on artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductor technologies. This move indicates that, like the United States, China views advanced AI as a critical national asset requiring regulation and seeks to keep domestically developed AI products and equipment within its borders.
Reuters today cited the Financial Times, reporting that representatives from companies including Alibaba, ByteDance, and AI startup Zhipu attended meetings led by China's Ministry of Commerce to discuss imposing restrictions on the most advanced AI models. The scope includes closed-source models and certain open-weight models, as well as exploring ways to prevent Western access to China's advanced technologies.
The report also states that Chinese authorities have consulted domestic tech firms on measures to prevent overseas chip manufacturers such as Qualcomm and TSMC from producing advanced semiconductors based on designs from Chinese tech companies like Huawei, Alibaba, and ByteDance.
Earlier, Reuters had revealed that the Chinese government invited multiple technology firms to discuss the possibility of restricting foreign users' access to China's most advanced AI models, including next-generation models not yet released.
