As the third-busiest railway station in Taiwan by passenger volume, Zhongli Station serves an average of 55,000 passengers daily, making it the most representative commercial and transportation hub in southern Taoyuan. With the advancement of the Taoyuan Railway Underground Project, the future 'New Zhongli Station' will be upgraded into Taoyuan’s first tri-rail integrated core station, integrating the underground Taoyuan Railway Zhongli Station, Taoyuan Airport MRT Line A23 Zhongli Station, and the extension of the Taoyuan Metro Green Line to Zhongli. This integration will dramatically reshape the local transportation network.
Once the new station opens, passengers will be able to transfer seamlessly within the same station complex, eliminating the need to exit and walk to other stations. Whether traveling to the Taipei metropolitan area, Taoyuan International Airport, THSR Taoyuan Station, or taking the TRA Western Trunk Line, overall commuting and transfer efficiency will be significantly improved, offering great convenience to commuters.
What is the timeline for railway undergrounding, and when will each station open?
The Taoyuan Railway Underground Project is one of the largest railway infrastructure projects in Taiwan, planning a total of eight stations along the route. In terms of construction progress, the first phase is scheduled to commence operations in 2033, including Fengming, Taoyuan, Neili, Zhongli, and Pingzhen stations. The second phase, covering Zhonglu, Taoyuan Hospital, and Zhongyuan stations, is expected to open sequentially in 2034.
Regarding the much-anticipated tri-rail integration opening timeline, each component project has different progress schedules. The underground TRA Zhongli New Station is scheduled to open in 2033, aligned with the first phase. The Airport MRT A23 Zhongli Station is expected to be completed by 2029. The Green Line extension to Zhongli will advance in stages according to overall progress.
The new Zhongli Station will adopt an underground design, while the ground level will feature a mixed-use commercial development, including shopping malls, offices, and lifestyle facilities. This will reorganize pedestrian and vehicular flow, transforming the station into a new urban landmark for the Zhongli district.
The concert economy is about to take off—how will the MRT reach the Zhongli Dome?
In addition to the railway undergrounding project, the Taoyuan Metro Green Line has already entered the testing phase, with the initial segment from G15b Kangkou Station to G11 Arts and Cultural District Station (7 stations) expected to open by the end of the year. One of the most anticipated highlights of the Green Line’s extension to Zhongli is its connection to the future Zhongli Dome.
The Zhongli Dome will be located within the Zhongli Sports Park, covering approximately 9 hectares. Positioned as Taiwan’s first large-scale concert-dedicated venue, it will become Taoyuan’s second dome stadium. In terms of transportation planning, a Green Line extension station—G26 Zhongli Sports Park Station—will be built near the intersection of Huanzhong East Road and Fuzhou Road. The preceding station, G25, will be the integrated Zhongli Station connecting TRA and Airport MRT. In the future, attendees of major events or concerts can easily reach the venue by transferring from TRA or Airport MRT to the Green Line, effectively dispersing traffic congestion and solving parking issues during large events.
